G'day all,
There seems to be some different stories across the internet with regards to the official saturn backup memory cart. Mine (white one) began stuffing up a while ago (after nearly 10 years of faithful service), opening it up revealed, like the internal saturn one, a CR2032 battery (interestingly enough the voltage hadnt really dropped much, it registered at ~2.8v).
Anyway, there seems to be a few people on the net that are convinced that the official cart is flash memory. I'm a bit confused now, i'm wondering whether perhaps sega quietly released 2 versions of the cart one being flash and the other being battery backed.
What have you guys found?

Hmm.. that is interesting. Never opened one up myself...
I'll see if I can open mine up sometime. I gotta go find the cart which is stored away...

Sorry to bump an ancient thread but I found this recently and questioned my own cartridge. Here's the result: i.imgur.com/UiR9S.jpgFlash memory indeed! Only a picture of the parts side but the OPs internal PCB doesn't look like the backside of my own SEGA PCB.

It seems there are some different cart types, some using flash, some using batteries.
I like how the only snapshot there to go 404 is the one with the actual guts of the thing.

When I read some may have batteries had to check to make sure... thankfully they freaking don't! I have just rapped both my backup carts, have MD cart tool, 2 secs to check. If you have one and can open then push the back up parallel to the front as the top is clipped inside to the front. Thanks for the warning, it was better to make sure than for one to die because it did have a battery.

Does it say Sega anywhere on the PCB? If not it's most likely fake.

Does it say Sega anywhere on the PCB? If not it's most likely fake. There are quite a bunch of Sega hardware that does not have Sega written on their pcb, despite being original. The Sega CD 2, for example. It's entirely conceivable that they used different, cheaper designs later one. For the flash based cart, I've seen ones labeled 1994 and 1996, but not ones 1997 or 1998. Also, the Sega CD backup cart used batteries too.

Yeah. battery back-up carts = accident waiting to happen. I'm just waiting for my Snes/gameboy/N64 carts to die on me!!

Nice. Who made those pics? Any chance for a pic of their other sides? YOU REALLY NEED... to become best mates with Red Raider. He'd sort jizz worthy images of Saturn stuff for you if you asked?

Notice again they have GOLD pins on these different Sega carts, not silver which was normally associated with 3rd party stuff like MD Action Replay carts.
For the record I do check my Sega made MD carts yearly and no sign of the batteries leaking, Sony branded bats.
I would love to see inside a Codemasters MD cart such as Micro Machines 96, the screws are under the sticky label on the front so don't want to spoil it. I'm sure they have some flash type memory but again, just in case... Again I've not looked inside any Accolade carts such as Test Drive II and Winter Challenge as they also save but these use a different type of screw head to Sega. I think they are hard state flash type again tho.
