I got a copy of House of the Dead JAP a couple of days ago and must say that it is not a very visually appealling game. It is fun though. I am left wondering what this game could have been if it used the Virtua Cop engine. I mean imagine the crisp images of virtua cop but the bad guys are zombies. Thoughts?

I know the game is unfinished and at times i noticed windows missing and whatever else but where are the most obvious places its unfinished? I know the models and some textures were palceholders but is there anything REALLY out of the ordinary?

Theres a good thread about this (very dear to my heart) game here: segasaturngroup.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=games&thread=3057&page=1Theres some great insights from Anthaemia there too. My thoughts, gfx aside - it plays just like its big brother which is the most important thing. Although better graphics definately would've been great, in a way the harshness of it still kinda fits with the theme. For the closer HOD experience, get your hands on the US version. This way you can still play it in native 60Hz and the debug mode includes RED blood, which has been omitted from the japanese pressing. I also own the eur version which I bought new at the time, however playing it at 50Hz (despite being partially pal optimised - for screen size) just amplifies the choppiness here and there when the framerate drops. To date I'm still waiting for this to get ported again, I will not give up hope. I gotta say I love Overkill, the mechanics of the game take me back to the feelings of the original HOD None of the others (2, 3, 4) feel right to me. Despite sega apparently thinking HOD1 is too dated to port again (bollocks if you ask me, another excuse was that the source code was lost) they obviously didnt think it was too dated to offer 3 courses based in tribute to it on Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, plus about 4 unlockable music tracks. I was very happy to claim that as a win, but of course it just reminded me of the apparent snub this game is receiving. Privately I reckon there's more to this story. It possible that the red blood option was left off in the japanese pressing due to a terrible murder of a young girl in japan at the time (this is a vague memory, were going back a long way here, but thats all i can recall of it), I believe there was some sort of apprehension toward graphically violent stuff at the time, which is fair enough. Anyone remember the rumours back when HOD2 was about to come out on Dreamcast? About how a conversion of the first one was going to be included as an easter egg. Boy was I hoping that was true, of course it wasnt *sigh* Always on the hunt for more hod1 news...

I own the japanese version and I did not know that red blood is not supported. Now it becomes clear why the US-version is that expensive...60Hz and red blood. I played the game only short because I think the port sucks very much. But I love the 2nd part on the Dreamcast

I was very happy to claim that as a win, but of course it just reminded me of the apparent snub this game is receiving. Privately I reckon there's more to this story. During its corporate reshuffling a few years back Sega lost the source code to many high profile titles, including Panzer Dragoon Sega plus several Model 2 games such as Daytona USA and The House Of The Dead. As company policy dictated at the time, a PC version of HOTD was built on the console edition - I can understand why Sega may feel a little embarrassed by this now! Anyway, you could argue the "missing source code" and "dated visuals" excuses were both valid for The House Of The Dead's non-appearance as part of the Returns package on Wii. Sega Rally may have been recovered, but the likes of Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop had to be recreated for their PlayStation 2 releases through emulation. Even the recent Sega Racing Classic was quickly dissected as being the original Daytona USA with a few hacks (such as the title screen and music being edited to remove a certain word Sega no longer has the rights to use, obviously) and forced to run in widescreen via a more advanced version of the same Model 2 emulator fans have been enjoying on their computers for quite a while now. Throwing in a little HOTD-themed content in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing was a case of recycling previously existing concepts, and without confirmation from its developers (Sumo Digital) there's no way anyone can be sure if they used any of the original material or not. However, considering their position within the overall structure of Sega it's unlikely a UK-based third party would have been able to access files even the AM divisions responsible for such games in the first place couldn't locate. While it may seem as if there's more to this story (and I'd love to believe that - I really would), the fact is that Sega was just plain careless in the past. Still, if reports are to be trusted then at least the raw data for Shenmue remains locked away deep somewhere along with a few other treasures I could mention...

Sega, do a backflip on your opinion of HOD1 being dated and give us an emu verision of that too!! Totally agree, no doubt the original material wasnt used, its obviously just been re-created. It just annoys me that they wont try to re-create (or emulate) it as a full game, but still pay tribute to it in S&S racing. *waving fist in anger at sega* Is the source code always necessary to port a game? I'm sure there are games in the past that would have just been re-made wouldnt there? Like you said earlier if VC and VF were re done via emulation, then why not dump the HOD roms and do the same. It seems like it just isnt deemed worthy to bring 'back from the dead', pardon the pun, but it's the daddy of them all, thats worth something - in my book anyway. At the end of the day, I know I have to fork out and buy the model 2 board, and then quit my bitching. I just need the powers that be to show this relic some motherpluckin respect
