I just found this review from December 1996: www.gamespot.com/saturn/action/powerslave/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary%3Bread-review (Note: Unlike in Europe, in Japan and the USA the Saturn version was released before both the Playstation and PC versions. So at the time and place this review was written, Exhumed was a Saturn exclusive.) That's right, a 5.4/10. I am most struck by the line "Ultimately, think of this game as Doom with a plot (sort of), a few camels, and the proverbial mother lode of jumping spiders." Having not yet managed to get my hands on the game myself, have any of you who have played it have a rebuttal to offer?

i didn't get too far into it, but i thought Exhumed was awesome. Sure it is pretty much the same as Doom with an Egyptian skin, but most FPSs of the time were just Doom reskinned (Alien Trilogy anyone?).

Well, I must say that this game IS awesome. I'd probably have to say it's the best corridor shooter on the Saturn. 5.4!!? How much of this game did they play? Simply because whilst the game initially seems like just another doom clone there's just so many great designs and Ideas in it.
The game itself, has as much in common with an adventure game, as it does with a 1st person shooter. The whole 'hub' structure - along with the collection of object/weapons to aid your progress, is very similar to Hexen. However, because of the fluidity of the game-play and the structure of the levels, it seems far more satisfying. The controls are tight enough to allow for a great level of accuracy (you'll need it on some of the later levels) and some of the level designs are inspired (like exploring the water-filled catacombs or tip-toeing around laser beams). Nearly all of the items are needed eventually to solve the games many varied levels and the search for the radio-parts will keep you interested until the end (I know it's somewhere nearby, I can HEAR it!!).
It's a truly entertaining and satisfying experience to solve the many problems and to find a use for a newly acquired item. Furthermore, the enemies provide worthy opponents (damn those giant wasps and fire beasties) and the platform nature of many of the levels is challenging, but always fair. The experience may seem a little long in the tooth for some players, but there's definitely a great game here if you're up to the challenge. Add to this alternative endings and the secret 'Team Dolls' for expert players to find and we're talking about a 'must buy' game for anyone who's a fan of this genre.
5.4/10 = 9/10

That, and Death Tank. Not as good as it's enhanced sequel, but you can't beat good ol' fashioned Death Tank... is what I would say, if I owned the game. I WANT to get a copy of this sometime, but either way Death Tank still adds to Powerslave's awesomeness, right?

If you like Doom, you'll love this. The only draw-back is the lack of weapons. Half of the weapons aren't guns but are still very imaginative. The major difference between this and Doom is the ability and necessity to go back to levels to find keys and open hidden doors etc. I enjoyed it.

Recently played through this again and really enjoyed it. The levels are well set out, atmospher is effective and music is excellent in places. Only annoying parts were the floating platforms where one fall meant starting the level over again and the fact some pots contained explosives which is simply unfair game design. Shame we never had a sequel

Problem detected right there. Jeff Gerstmann was notorious in the Saturn Era for rating Saturn games lower for no good reason other than it was on the Saturn. He gave Virtual On a low score too saying something along the lines of "Play this stupid game for 10 minutes, then go play a real game like [insert lame PS1 game here]."

I like Exhumed but I don't think it's as good as most people say. Still, 5.4 is pretty low. I'd give it a 7.0.

I enjoyed the game. It added new and inventive elements to the genre, and even has elements from platformers and adventure games. The Egyptian theme is awesome and I love some of the music. Definitely a must play for Saturn owners. That Gamespot reviewer can go **** himself with this Playstation.

Haven't played this but I hate Doom all FPS of that ilk. Having said that, all the gaming mags of the day published the same drivel. EGM was the worst. If a game came out on Saturn it automatically received a low score. The opposite on Playstation. They were all drinking the kool-aid. It's kind of nice to see how kind time has been to the Saturn.

Another little bit of Saturn history that I didn't know about. It's occurred to me that back in 1996 Gamespot may not have been the reputable publication that they are today in general. I just checked for their reviews of other versions of Powerslave to compare - no review of the Playstation version, but Stephen Poole's review of the PC version is "interesting". It's not so much that he gave it only a 5.6, since his complaints have less to do with the game itself than with its conversion to PC. It's that he repeatedly says it was converted from the Playstation. Very odd, given that the PSX version hadn't even been released in the USA when the review was posted.

He gave Virtual On a low score too saying something along the lines of "Play this stupid game for 10 minutes, then go play a real game like [insert lame PS1 game here]." I was having a look at some Gamespot games recently, and I noticed that a lot of Saturn games got low ratings, even if the review said they were good. For example, the Mr Bones review said it was a fun and varied platformer with great animation. In fact, the review didn't say a single bad thing about the game, but it still only got a 6.3. This was Tom Ham instead though, but I don't think it was just Jeff Gerstmann who hated on the Saturn. I hunted around for quite some time, looking up well-known and famous Saturn games, and I couldn't find a single positive review, with the only two exceptions: Fighters Megamix and Fighting Vipers. While both great games, they're also both very similar, so it's no real surprise that they both got a good review. For Exhumed, yea, it looks pretty good. As others have said, the Egyptian theme looks great. So refreshing to see an original theme for a FPS! I doubt I'd get it any time soon, but it looks like you could do a lot worse than grab this game.

...it is pretty much the same as Doom with an Egyptian skin... If you like Doom, you'll love this. Why people keep comparing Exhumed to Doom is interesting to me as It's more like Quake than Doom ever was. You can jump & many of the levels are multi floor (rooms above other rooms) which Doom was incapable of. If you're calling it a Doom clone just because the enemies are 2d sprites then that's a pretty shallow comparison. Anyway, Doom is just a Wolfenstein clone if you think about it. That Gamespot reviewer can go **** himself... I like Jeff Gerstmanns reviews as I find we have similar tastes. personally I hate Virtual On so I think the score he gave it is too high since 5/10 is supposed to be "average" (I despise this modern thinking of "anything that gets a 7 or lower is shit"). Also since he's a big fan of Sonic R, Fighters MegaMix & Saturn Bomberman I wouldn't call him a Saturn hater. Infact After years of following his work I know he is a lover of old Sega (new Sega... not so much ). I agree with alot of his old reviews except maybe the one for Marvel Super Heroes cause I fucking love that game.
