I know it may sound absurd, but I still haven't a copy of Daytona USA. I've got a copy of the CCE, but as you all may know, the game controls are poor, and the soundtrack isn't as awesome as the original one.
My question is, which version should I pick? The Japanese version or the PAL version? I know the game has several flaws but the PAL version came out later so probably it means that Sega corrected some issues there!
Let me know what you think of each version!

The Japanese 'Daytona USA CE' is my personal best of the Saturn versions.

Circuit Edition was the best Saturn take on Daytona USA by far, though it wasn't perfect. The slowdown on 777 Speedway still hadn't been fixed, and there were a few songs missing from the PAL version. On the other hand, it did provide significant graphical improvements elsewhere, and the handling was much closer to the arcade original. Also, the option to race at different times of day was a great new feature. However, I prefer the later PC-only Evolution/Deluxe for its exclusive course, which is a real challenge - if only Sega Europe had waited to release a "complete" update containing this extra track, all music (if this was even possible, considering disc space limitations) and the many Japanese alterations...

ive not played the japanese original daytona usa but the uk daytona usa had some lovely borders which made it just plain nasty so im guessing the japanese version at full screen and full speed is the one to own
but the uk version is still a very good game to play, and in my opinion better than the uk cce
or just invest in a dreamcast and daytona 2001 as its better than the arcade version

Yeah, I've heard before that Japanese CCE version is the best one available, it came out after the PAL version, and the controls have been improved, but apparently they're still not as good as in the original version. I'm planning to get this version too, but for now I would like to get the original. I was just checking if there are any differences between the PAL and the Japanese versions of the original!

I don't like CCE nor do I like 2001. Despite all its flaws the original Saturn port had the presentation, handling and music of the arcade and ultimately that's what matters most to me.

Haven't played Daytona 2001 but I couldn't agree more regarding the saturn titles. The original is fantastic. Yes there is pop up but you don't even notice it when you're playing (other than a single turn on the intermediate track). I regard CCE as a separate game and once you learn the handling it is great as well. I've beaten all tracks on both these titles but wouldn't argue with those who feel that the JP CE is the best version. I've only played it a couple of times but it does seem to be the best of both worlds having the handling and songs of the original combined with the graphical enhancements. As far as the JP version of Daytona USA (not CE) I've read that it was even more rushed than the US version. This is however purely based on my 41 year old memory.

Three words - Model 2 Emulator Actually going this route you probably need a racing wheel since the arcade was never designed for anything else.

Daytona 2001 was a first class display of how to update a well loved classic, CCE was a bit lack lustre and the Dreamcast update made up for the disappointment

Ok, I'll stick with the PAL version then!
The Model 2 emulator looks quite promising, I definitely need to check that (got to find my old racing wheel to play it). Is it a flawless emulation?

Model 2 games look better emulated than in actuality. Otherwise, yea. Pretty accurate.

That reminds me - does anyone know if the Model 2 was capable of texture filtering natively? I'm looking to setup my version of the emulator so that it's as close to looking like an actual arcade board as possible, which means I'll be disabling any features that weren't present on the original hardware (although I'm missing the improvements raising the display resolution brings). One thing I can be sure of is that "real" transparency wasn't possible, so I won't be having that particular option enabled... dithering FTW!

Hacing played both the Japanese and PAL version of the original Daytona, there's not much difference in them. The main difference is that the Japanese version has smaller borders (that's right, the NTSC version had borders too!).
You can't beat the original, but I really enjoyed CCE back in the day, seeing it as a separate game like Bradcap1. And the Japanese CE is a marked improvement over it.
And I recommend the Model 2 emulator too.

Anthaemia. - I thought the Model 2 board was capable of true transparency (alpha blending). What do you mean by true transparency?
