Which is the better version of Dodonpachi between the Saturn and Playstation 1?
Racketboy says the PS1; a reviewer at Shmups.com says the the Saturn version: Malc the owner of Shmups.com, who usually makes comments at the end of each review someone makes at his site, mentioned at the end of the Dodonpachi review of the same guy who said the Saturn version was the best and said that the PS1 was the best. (*breath of air*) So you can see why I'm a little confused.
One advantage the PS1 has according the Yart from this site, is that when not playing in fullscreen (non-tate mode) for both home versions of Dodonpachi, in the PS1 it's easier to dodge the bullets because the framerate or something is better for the PS1, while jumpy or something for the Saturn (but the Saturn version is fine when in fullscreen/tate mode). Though when I played both non-tate mode I haven't really noticed this. Either; a) playing it on an emulator this problem can be fixed with certain settings (should of messed around with the settings now that I think about it); or b) I simply just suck too much to notice this.
Ok, here are the other Saturn disadvantages; pixelated explosion; some missing sound effects, like a boss' lazer (don't know of how many of these there are?); and according to Racketboy he says that the Saturn music sounds muffled (though from my experience the music volume was just lower & the treble not as hight); I also noticed that on the last level were this bee shaped enemy appears, in the PS1 version (and maybe the Arcade? I forget) beneath them is this circular glass tube that is missing from at least the Saturn version.
Playstation disadvantages; in two player mode or in fullscreen/tate mode you can't switch between the 3 ships & player 2 has to have the same ship as you, due to the PS1's more limited RAM (your ship selection in this mode had to be made in the option menu)(also, if you play this game only on one credit, not being able to change ships ain't a problem, obviously); is just a bare bone Arcade port without any of the extra Saturn version home port features;... and I guess that is it?... But wait, there are two things that really make me dislike the PS1 version. Well, mainly the sound effect for your guns. They're really loud and annoying in comparison to the Saturn and Arcade version (though this could be an emulation problem. And I couldn't test any other sound pluggins because only one of the many I tried worked); the other thing is that I didn't like was that the treble of the music was too high. Higher than the Arcade version too. Also, I noticed some extra instruments during the between level score tally screen where the some extra funky bass + treble riffs are being played that I don't think I recall in the Arcade version either? Now my dislike for the music may not of been this high or maybe even at all if I hadn't of started with the Saturn version... but the funny thing is that I have no problem with the Arcade version at all (as in it doesn't have any of the PS1 problems that bother me).
So yeah, what are others thoughts for those that played both home version or all three versions of the game? And which version do you think is the best and preffered... Also, Yart, which version do you most play + the one you most play with your friends in two player mode (psst, don't be afraid to say the Playstation version here >_>)
