Got my copy last night from eBay. What a corking little game, the graphics are excellent and I love the animation. Anyone else really rate it?

Yeah, I think it's great. The graphics have really stood up, I was quite impressed booting it up for the first time.

I thought it looked and sounded good. But the big heads ruined the gameplay for me. It made a lot of the moves redundant.

I've always been curious about this one. Saw it on shelves back then and wondered why they made a kids version.
But I am a big fan of the VF games, so I'll be looking for this one after I get a Saturn.

and not to mention that durals head with the fish is truely transparent despite the saturns supposed inability to do transparencies, go figure, great game i played it more than VF 2

The Saturn CAN'T do them. Simple as. Just programming trickery allowed it. Way too much effort for a simple effect that should have been standard anyway. Bloody SEGA xD
Anyways back on topic, is VF Kids easier to play than the standard? Like, moves wise or is it literally VF2 with big heads?

From what I can remember, there's not only a Kids mode with simplified commands, but the ability to create your own custom attacks. Due to the new "Chibi" proportions of its characters, the game plays very differently from Virtua Fighter 2 - both in terms of physics and hit detection. Also, graphically it's slightly better than VF2, and despite only being part of a scrolling parallax background layer, it was always great to see the fence surrounding Wolf's stage make its Saturn debut (although Fighters Megamix would take this feature even further as an actual polygonal wall around the ring). As with Fighting Vipers, the Japanese version of Virtua Fighter Kids included sponsorship from a real life drinks producer. However, rather than Pepsi, in this particular instance Sega struck a deal with Sinvino, the makers of Java Tea. In fact, there was even a special edition of the game released that allows you to fight in a stylised cartoon interpretation of the company's factory! Finally, I seem to recall that Dural's head transparency effect was achieved using the same programming trick responsible for the explosions in Robotica.

The Saturn CAN'T do them. Simple as. Just programming trickery allowed it. Actually, the Saturn couldn't do hardware alpha blends but software alpha blends weren't a problem. But as you say too much processing power used just to do a simple effect which is why it's always better to have dedicated hardware to do that kind of thing. So the Saturn can do transparencies just not hardware transparencies.

What a fantastic game... the option to have the adult characters as opposed to the chibi is a nice touch as well
