Does anyone else have the Japanese version of Shining Wisdom?
I have it, and I've noticed that the game does not play the intro video. I boot the game up, it goes to the produced by or under license from SEGA, screen goes black, I hear the ominous music, but no video. If I press start, the title screen appears and the game itself runs fine.
As a reference, I just popped in the Gradius Deluxe Pack and the intro FMV played as normal.
Also, there is no "Sonic Software Planning" screen before the game either.
I'm using an HST-3200 and if I remember correctly, this also happened on my old US Saturn with a PAR.

Hmm...I had it last year and I think I maybe had that issue? I don't have it anymore, or I'd check.

Why not play the US version, isn't this a game you'd want in English?
Interestingly enough I think this has to be one of the only games that has 3 different translations. Working Designs thankfully handled the US version. Ive heard from more than a few people that their entertaining/funny translation made the game actually enjoyable compared to the more safe PAL script.

The Japanese version is waaaay less expensive, and I only have a Japanese Saturn. You're talking to someone who has played through Shining Force CD in Japanese. In both the Saturn and Sega CD, I prefer Japanese releases across the board because they're usually much cheaper and they use regular jewel cases that don't get destroyed/disc doesn't come loose and get destroyed in shipping. I'm perfectly willing to deal with a language barrier if I'm saving a ton of money. I have Shining Force III part 1 that I plan on tackling sometime in the future. Plus in the case of the Shining games, there's Shining Force Central to help with the script.

which revision is it ? check the inner ring of the cd: GS-9057P-00416-xxx GS-9057P-00416A-xxx GS-9057P-00416B-xxx
I don't remember any problem with this game, as it has 2 revisions, there are probably some bugs in the 1st revision, one might be a problem of the video with some saturn consoles.

A few times in my life Ive contemplated learning Japanese on the side just for fun but also maybe to pick up a few things when gaming.

Same thing happened with my Japanese copy of Shining Wisdom I had years ago as well. Interesting to hear that you had that issue on a Japanese Saturn since back then I assumed it was an issue with Action Replay compatibility. Guess there was a bad print?

My Japanese copy has the exact same issue. Googling it brought me here!
Looking on the Japanese Wikipedia there is a fix for it! Boot the Saturn with the drive open to get to the CD player and then close the drive and boot the game from there, then the opening movie will play.

Huh, that is weird. What revision do you guys have? I'll check mine and post later. Thankfully the rest of the game isn't impacted by whatever bug this is.

Boot the game from the Sega Saturn bios screen to avoid this issue, so power on the Saturn then insert the disc. If you power on the game with the disc in the drive you will get this issue.
Croc and Whizz have similar issues when not started from the bios.
PAL version of Wisdom doesn't have this issue and I also have a Japanese version and I don't think my version has the issue, but been a while since I played my Japanese copy it is however a later build of the game, GS-9057P-00416A.
