A hard choice but I've gone for Duke because it's possibly the most fun and the levels are nice and varied.
Quake is very impressive but gets a bit samey and dark. I find it pretty hard too.
Exhumed looks and plays beautifully but is the one I've played least so can't judge properly. I tend not to enjoy FPS platformers as much as straight forward shooters.

Okay, having played all 3 today. I'll have to give it to Duke Nuken 3D. I had forgotten how solid this game was. Exhumed came close but when the most memorable enemies in Exhumed are Red Spiders, something is seriously lacking there so it had to be Duke. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Quake, I often have to be in the right mood to play it which isn't the case with the other two.

Quake may be the more technically impressive of Lobotomy's two conversions, but it's clearly pushing the Saturn in ways that forced some compromises, while Duke Nukem 3D takes full advantage of the Slavedriver engine to offer significant benefits when compared to its PC original, so for that reason I've given my vote to the middle child of this short-lived company's software family. Besides, it's their only Saturn game to feature NetLink support (not that we got to enjoy such an aspect over here). Despite the glowing praise, I've never really thought much of Exhumed - it was responsible for putting its makers on the map, yet as a standalone experience, it's just not something I rated all that highly. Oh, and the fact "DN3D" also includes Death Tank Zwei absolutely did not influence my vote! Those are fair points anthaemia. Powerslave should also get some praise for having Death Tank included (although they left it out of the PAL version for no real reason). And yes the Netlink aspect of Duke is to be much praised. One of the coolest things I experienced on the Saturn. However I wish that somehow they would have been able to add netlink mode to Quake. Even just a bare bones 1 vs 1

Yeah Duke 3D is truly the easiest of the 3 to pick up and play. They did an all around wonderful job. Its personally probably the most pick up and play game to me on the system. I probably run through a few levels every couple months. The absolute only flaw in the game is there are a couple of secret areas late in the game that they forgot to put power ups. They are just empty rooms. Perhaps just a bit of a rushed error with Quake next on their plate and a deadline.

I've finished Exhumed. Twice. Admittedly I had to cheat to finish it as I found some of the later levels and puzzles in the game a bit too frustrating for my liking. But my point is, the red spiders out stay their welcome, they appear far too much and more often than any different type of enemy and that's not appealing to me. Having said all that, I still love the game. The only one I haven't completed is Quake so I've been making a concious effort to play it more this week.

I picked Quake as it's one of my favorite games of all time and the saturn versions gritty visuals tick all the right boxes. Glad to say I've actually completed the saturn port. My least favorite is actually Duke Nukem 3D as certain areas the texture placement is really poor (due to hitting deadlines i guess) and the swimming mechanics hurt my brain, perhaps it's the one I have the least amount of playtime with. Currently replaying Exhumed and absolutely loving it. I'm a sucker for early 3D platformers.

The gritty visuals added to the positive look to the game as opposed to even the N64 cleaner version. Ive probably complete Quake Saturn 5-6 times. Every year or so Ill sit down and run through it in a couple days. I enjoy all the stats you can see such as how many secrets you've found. I don't think Ive done a complete 100% run yet but darn near close once. Some of the secret areas are pretty cool and of course so are the secret levels.

Three stellar Saturn games but the choice isn't that hard for me.
I played Quake to death on the PC, particularly deathmatches at high school or at home when friends would bring their computers around. Nothing matched that sensation of gunning down your friends like stinking pigs. The Saturn conversion is a technical marvel. How Lobotomy got it to run is short of a miracle. As good as the conversion is, capturing the full horrifying experience of single player mode, it lacks the thrills of the all important deathmatch experience of its PC counterpart. To me, then, it comes in at a very respectable third.
Duke Nukem 3D's sense of humour, varied real-world locations, and the sheer fun and cleverness of the level design and enemies makes it one of my favourite FPS ever. The Saturn port is a stellar conversion, packing in most of the fun of the PC original and running at a very fluid speed. If it wasn't for the other game in this poll, it would rank higher than second place.
Exhumed is a masterpiece of a game. What it lacks in initial appeal it makes up for as players progress through the game. It created the first-person platformer genre before the term was even coined. The Egyptian setting and atmospheric soundtrack lend a wonderfully fresh and rich environment and atmosphere to the game. The Metroidvania style backtracking adds immensely to how you play the game. And then there are some clever level designs and unique enemies. Perhaps it's not the most instantly appealing of these three games, but it contains a depth far greater than Quake or Duke, and so this makes it the obvious first choice for me.
This is what I said about Exhumed in my Top 20 PAL Saturn Games feature, where I ranked it number 4:
Most think Exhumed is a first-person shooter. To label it thus overlooks so many of its other elements. While first-person shooting forms a large part of the action, collecting artifacts to level up your character adds RPG elements, navigating perilous platforms mirrors platformer gameplay, and backtracking to earlier levels to access previously unreachable areas and items as part of the quest resembles an adventure game. Released six years before Metroid Prime, Exhumed is a first-person adventure. Even if viewed as a FPS, its Egyptian theme and unique selection of levels, enemies, and weapons make it distinctive enough from the average shooter. Add some solid graphics, spectacular lighting effects, a silky-smooth frame-rate, and an atmospheric soundtrack, and Exhumed has all the qualities that make it an essential purchase.
You can't go wrong with any of these games, no matter how you rank them.

VERY well said about exhumed. the game is more than an fps game. I think it's one of the best first person adventure style games, better than 3d metroids.

I've never done this before but I've overturned my vote. Quake, I owe you a FULL apology. Quake now has my vote. I was being lazy and hadn't invested that much time in Quake which I realise was unfair so I've now played it to a fair amount that I've played the other two and my goodness! The atmosphere is staggering. Don't ever play this game with the light off. Quake first, Exhumed second and Duke 3rd. And yes having read Tempests comments I decided to replay Exhumed and realised I was letting my red spider annoyance over shadow the merits of the whole game. I see the Exhumed now clearly for what it is now and it is a masterpiece. I agree. I'm still preferring Quake though.

Fuck. This is hard. Duke Nukem 3D is a classic that is great fun to play, and Quake is one of my favourite old school shooters, which still keeps me on edge every time I play it.
I have to give it to Exhumed though. What Lobotomy did with that game was amazing, and the Metroid Prime-esque gameplay makes it feel like a breath of fresh air compared to the Doom clones of the era.
All three are fantastic must have titles though.

My choice is Exhumed. I loved the Indiana Jones cameo in the intro and all the ancient Egyptian backstory on top of that the graphics/audio were top notch. Gave me bragging rights over my friends PS1 too which at the time was few and far between. It was a very good game. Quake shouldn't have been possible but Lobotomy pulled it off but I too found it dark. Duke came close but ultimately Exhumed comes top.

This poll really suprised me, I actually thought Duke Nukem 3D was going to win. Even though I'm preferring Quake at the moment, I'm actually glad Exhumed/Powerslave won or is winning shall I say.

Technically Quake is probably the most impressive. Was never a fan of it as a game though, on any platform.
Haven't played Duke Nukem, so couldn't say. The fact is had Netlink co-op is ridiculously cool.
I haven't played Exhumed in years. Had it on PS1. It was pretty cool.
