I completely agree. Anything polygon on the Saturn is appreciated even if its not too clean IMO. Yes the textures weren't optimized as they would have been if they had more time, but overall its a colorful gritty game even in its current form.

I was responding to Sych's post... Fair enough, but why do people bitch about HotD graphics on Saturn? Look no worse than VC2 to me.

If you look close enough, sadly, there are missing polygons from the enemy models, lots of poorly optimized textures. The company that did the conversion didn't have the time to go back and clean these issues up like normal. Sega chose to pay them for their 60% version. At the same time if you just play the game and enjoy the flow and pace, its all there. If you pay to close attention to the graphics it will get to you like some people. For me, I just enjoy the gameplay and the graphics are good enough to get by. It also, to me, helps knowing its development cycle.

Virtua cop 2 followed close by house of the dead. Virtua Cop 2 holds up better but for as bad as House of the dead looks still fun to play.

Here's one review that corroborates my experience: clubsega.blogspot.com.au/2008/10/house-of-dead-saturn-review.htmlOne area where slowdown is rampant, is in chapter 1 when you come out of the sewers in that room with the giant cog. Another is the room where you have to open the cell to save the civilians from the zombies inside. In chapter 2, when you have the option to raise the bridge in the lab, shots don't register, forcing the player to take the default route, making the option of multilple routes, here at least, negligable. I just had to pick up on this, Tempest you were right. I experienced some slowdown for the first time ever whilst playing through chapter 1 in the area you mentioned and I realised now why it happened. It was because I changed the Sight Speed in the options menu. I always leave the Sight Speed on the default of '3' but today I decided to explore it and chose a different setting and low and behold the slow down kicked in. It wasn't rampant as you described it but enough for me to notice it. So the key thing is to leave the Sight Speed at its default setting or not have it too fast and the slowdown won't occur. Interesting find. Reminds me of having the rear mirror view left on in F1 Challenge and then taking it off.

That's interesting to know.
I don't think I ever changed the sight speed. And isn't that only for when you use the control pad? When I experienced all of the slowdown, it was using the lightgun.
I haven't forgotten about checking the game on 50Hz, it's just I'm moving and everything's packed up at the moment. I won't have my gaming systems set up for a few weeks yet. I'll get back to you then.

Is it worth getting Virtua Cop if I have VC2? Depends how often you play lightgun games. For me House of the Dead and VC2 are enough to ease my appetite for that genre so I'd say no but there are quite a few people that prefer the original VC over the sequel. Does the original offer mouse support?

Is it worth getting Virtua Cop if I have VC2? yes it is, for the music alone.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you about this, sych.
I've checked and there's still rampant slowdown throughout the game both on 50Hz and 60Hz.
I couldn't change the sight speed while playing with the gun, only with the pad. I had it set on default 3 and I still had problems with slowdown, so I don't think that has any effect on the frame rate.
The gun accuracy is better on my current play, possibly because I am using a better TV than last time. It's not perfect, mind you, but I'm hitting my targets 80-90% of the time now. That accuracy depends on the quality of the TV demonstrates how poorly optimised this game is and demonstrates why there are conflicting reports about the gun's accuracy in the game.
I also experienced a lot of graphical and audio glitches playing the game, even with the CD audio, which shouldn't happen. This makes me think it's a problem with this modded Saturn I'm using. I've had issues like this with late release games like PDS that really push the system and were not fully optimised, like Touring Car. Maybe this accounts for the excessive amount of slowdown I'm experiencing. Sadly, I don't have a legit copy of the game to try it on a different, non-modded system.
I hope this helps resolve some of our conflicting experiences with the game.
Sitting here listening to the game's music while typing this makes me really nostalgic for the game. If only it had been a much better port...

The house of the dead is buggy even with a real copy of the game on an unmodded saturn. I have a US longbox copy to confirm that yes all the same issues are present when playing a burned copy on a modded saturn.
