Hello everyone, I just bought a Sega Saturn on eBay and I'd like a little help.
I wanna use an s-video cable with an HDMI adapter/converter which I bought from eBay to get better picture than if I were using AV cables. The only reason I'm using an HDMI adapter is because my tv doesn't support s-video and I don't wanna bother with SCART. My question is will I get those screen lags that a few people seem to talk about? I'm still waiting on those items, so I'd like to inform myself beforehand.
Thank you guys!

My question is will I get those screen lags that a few people seem to talk about? In all likelihood, yep. Most of these devices (i.e. essentially everything that isn't built as a specialty device for retro gamers) aren't 240p-aware, so they'll de-interlace the image in such a way that the result is at least a couple of frames behind. It's also possible that if you're already used to playing old consoles on an HDTV, you won't really notice a difference in the delay (most HDTVs treat a 240p signal in a similar way). Personally, I'd say if you're already resigned to buying a new cable and a converter box, you might as well just go the SCART RGB route, but if that's your choice, that's your choice. If less lag is a virtue above all others, however, and you don't want to keep around a CRT for gaming, you're going to be spending some money for sure either way.

Cant help you with retro gaming to modern TV's. I myself have a 15 year old Sony WEGA that I run all my older systems on. I am dreading the day when it craps out and I will have to buy a new TV and be in the same boat you are in. There are a lot of brilliant people on here that can answer your questions. I responded because I was curious of what you bought? There are a lot of used and refurbished Sega Saturn systems out there. I have only owned two Sega Saturn systems in my life. The one I bought in the 90's when it first came out. My friend and I ran that thing into the ground. In the early 2000's I bought a new older one in stock after the Dreamcast came out. I did get a good price. Someone will answer your question. You are among friends. I will be interested in the results because again that is my distant future. Welcome to SEGA SATURN UK mate.

Your TV will probably have a game mode that disables some image processing features. Activating this will reduce the lag but no modern TV will operate without it. There is the basic problem of older consoles operating at a screen resolution that is not native to the TV. So some processing is required to rectify that.
My personal opinion? It will probably be OK - but it will depend on how good a gamer you are and how well you know how Saturn games perform with a CRT. I have in the past used my Saturn with a modern TV - used mine with a 32" Sony Bravia. I didn't notice any lag but then that's more to do with my ability as a gamer. It's a case of try it and see. I use mine with CRT now but that's only because I prefer the "warmer" picture as I have a particularly nice set.
I also used the same modern TV with my Wii. I had DJ Hero for that console and that game has a calibration mode that allows you to adjust the game to allow for screen lag. When I went into that mode I didn't need to adjust it.
I also used my 360 with that TV. And when I activated game mode on it I noticed I was performing better on bullet hell shooting games. But I wasn't consciously aware of any lag. So even with a modern console you really should active the game mode if there is one.
Maybe the Sony TVs (which are presumed to be a better brand) minimise lag to the point where I don't notice it. Hard to say really.
At EVO, the Smash Bros Melee competition is ran using Gamecubes hooked up to CRTs. Elite Melee players can notice the lag. Now if an event like EVO can't provide a modern TV to eliminate lag for elite players then no-one can.

Thank you so much for the input guys! goldark1974 asked me what did I buy? I bought a model 2 Sega Saturn with two model 2 controllers in the box, working. At least, that's what was said in the ad and I choose to trust it. I also bought 15 games, 11 american and 4 japanese.
As davik said, it will probably be OK and I trust that as well. I'm not hoping the picture quality or anything related to it is top notch, but at least better than the AV connection and without lags that will bother me in the future.
I'm not a videophile or anything, but I like a good picture and I set things up the best yet simplest way I can. That's why I wanted the s-video/HDMI connection instead of SCART which I have no idea how it works.
The system will arrive in early January. I'll keep you guys informed.
Merry Christmas to you all!

If your TV has a SCART there's a good chance you will get a good picture with an RGB SCART lead. I did with my Sony LCD.

The problem, guys, is that my TV doesn't support SCART. Or S-video. It only has component, AV and HDMI. That's why I'm getting one of those converters. It sucks, I know.

In that case, your best option is your component inputs. As far as I am aware there isn't a cable available yet that directly does this. You need a rgb scart lead and scart to component adapter leads. Both of these items are readily available. It will cost you around £45/$60. Well worth it. Don't go with the s- video hdmi option, it's a really bad idea.

Well the best option would be a proper 240p aware scaler like an XRGB or OSSC, but a component transcoder is definitely better than some S-Video to HDMI solution.

Ha, yeah, a framemeister would be the best option from personal experience. An essential, but a bit of an expensive luxury for most, sadly.

Hey, guys, I've been doing some research on the framemeister and I'm seriously considering in getting it. I have a question though.
Can I use it as a converter the same way I would be using a converter in the S-VIDEO and HDMI scenario, but with a framemeister instead?
What I mean by that is can I simply use the s-video cable, the framemeister and a HDMI cable to connect it to the TV and I'm all set? It's that simple??

To get the best results out of the framemeister mini use an RGB scart. There is no s-video input, and it's a lower quality signal to boot. If you buy a framemeister it will come with an adaptor.

So, marc, can I use a framemeister and an RGB start even though my tv doesn't support scart?
