I´ve started to get into the MM series lately, and I have thought about picking up one of the Saturn games - although I will probably opt with the Rockman iterations because they are cheaper (and I cant imagine they are any different that the English versions)
However, I´m not sure which would be best to get. MM8 looks similar to the MM games I have played (ive not played the X series), but I have heard good things about the X games too.
So, which should I get? Which is the most accessible to newbies of the series? (as an indication, I found the normal stages of MM2 to be just right, but then later through the Wily´s Castle it started to get a bit silly).

Its between X4 and 8. X3 feels and looks like a Snes game. I have the US X4 which is exceptionally good but very hard. I've read Megaman 8 is easier but it all depends on the challenge you're looking for.

X3 was a SNES game , and from what I know, runs on the Saturn with borders.
between X4 and 8, , I like X4 more, you get the 2 characters (which offer different styles) , I prefer the level design , and the overall atmosphere/graphics.
8 is a decent game though ,

Which one is easier and how does saving, checkpoints, lives, etc work in those games?

Megaman x3 is pointless on the Saturn (although the PAL boxart is great)
MegaMan x4 and 8 are both fantastic games.
Took me a while to finally get them since the prices had jumped so much.
x4 is a legit next gen Saturn title. Very beautiful game, challenging and well rounded.
MM8 is a very unique MM game and some are put off by it but you'll also see it has a lot of fans. For me I finally played through it last year, its excellent. Its also very cool that Capcom gave the Saturn the superior version with better background effects, tons more extras including classic bosses.
MM x4 is a true standout on the system though so the vote goes there.

I'll add that I never get tired of replaying Mega Man X4 - I've already gone through twice with each character. Mega Man 8 was mostly fun the first time but I hesitate to put it in a second time for reasons covered in the below paragraph. Mega Man X3 I've replayed once, but the second play was not on the Saturn. As for which is easiest: Definitely X4. It's certainly a challenging game through and through but I can't think of any parts that are completely unreasonable, except maybe doing the teleport hatches with Zero, since he can't exploit the weaknesses of some of the bosses. As a trade-off, though, the game is generally much easier with Zero, even letting you skip the fight with Colonel. X3 starts very hard, becomes astonishingly easy as you acquire upgrades, then slams you with a three-part final boss who puts most NES-era final bosses to shame for sheer difficulty. I dare say 8 is the hardest of the three by virtue of the two jetboard sections alone, which are enough to send anyone to an insane asylum. The timing of them is odd to say the least and a single screwup at any time and you have to start all over. On top of that you have the ridiculous final boss, which requires as much persistence as skill to defeat. Saving, checkpoints, and lives in all three games work exactly the same as in MM1 through MM7, except that saving is done to memory instead of with passwords, and in X4 you can save after the first fortress stage (but not after the second or third fortress stages, for whatever reason). The stages in MM8 are extra long, and as I recall they have multiple checkpoints in each one to compensate for this. X5 (not available for Saturn sadly) was the first Mega Man game since MM2 to mess with the saving/checkpoints system, allowing you to save between fortress stages and having "continue" put you at the same checkpoint you go to when you lose a life, thus essentially giving you infinite lives.

Well, I'm playing through MM8 at the moment and it is my favourite Mega Man game I've played (I've only played a small handful though). It's really damn good. I can't say anything bad about it at the moment.

Its very love/hate in the community as it was a departure. Lots of pastel colors and what not. But its very nice.

Maybe it is just because I had never even heard of Mega Man until the Dead Rising easter egg, and I hadn't properly played a Mega Man game until this year (only bits of one of them. Possibly 9 or 10).
Since I don't have that in-built nostalgia, I'm probably a lot more open to each one as an individual entry.
It's funny how I have played 2, X, X2 and 8 and the two I like the most are 8 and X2 so far. Normally MM fans have 2 or X as their favourite! They are great games, I just feel that X2 and 8 are a lot better.

I would definitely recommend Rockman X4 (the US version is pretty much out of the question given its price, and there isn't even a PAL release) Oddly enough I prefer playing as Zero , the gameplay is faster paced.

X3 I actually plan to get at some point on the Super Famicom , as it was designed for that platform (apparently the Saturn version has borders and such), but X4 is a fine game on the Saturn , quite difficult of course just like the Megaman series in general, but its fun.
It also looks quite nice, which is always a plus.
