I am planing to buy a S-Video cable and a SV Video to HMI Converter to upgrade the image quality of my n64.I know that the Saturn has S Video too and I wonder if S-Video would be a decent upgrade to my current set up. Composite over an AV to HDMI Scaler.
This is just a stop gap solution. In long term I will use my Saturn with the OSSC and Scart.
But I wonder now if getting an S-Video cable for the Saturn too would be worth it or not...

I wouldn't bother wasting the money, and instead put the money into an OSSC and a decent RGB SCART cable.
I mean , sure its better than the AV cable, but given its just a stop gap...

Yeah that sounds legit to me darkman . I was thinking in a similar way. The main reason to get the S Video Converter is my N64, because S-Video is the best you can get out of the System without some heavy modifications. But for the Saturn there are better choices. So it would probably be better to use the money for the Saturn S Video for the OSSC and a decent RBG cable. Until I have my OSSC I will stick with the composite. I was just curious what you guys here think about the S-video output of the Saturn.

Ive only used S-video mostly as a test, but the Saturn's S-video output is pretty good, but obviously not as good as a good RGB cable.
RGB modded N64s are quite easy to find actually, its more the PAL models that have issues (though that issue has been solved)

darkman I see. IN that case getting an RGB mod for the n64 is not out of the question then. Are the RGB cables for the Saturn from console goods nice? I found them when looking for a nice rgb cable online. The price also seems ok. And the reviews are also promising.

RGB cables are not digital, and as such the quality of the cable affects the picture quality (unlike HDMI , which is generally unaffected unless the cable is faulty) the ones I would recommend are from here www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/not the cheapest , but the quality is top notch , just make sure to get the right cable for the system (NTSC and PAL systems have different wiring)

www.ebay.nl/sch/thefoo.83/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from= although sold out now with saturn cables. this guy's cables are by far the best I've ever come across and I'm a total videophile and cable nut. they are the best cables. make sure you get csync with separated audio, bur you can always ask him what is best.

Their Saturn cables used to be good, but they started shipping them with a sync separator built in, which makes them much worse. The picture is now off-center and the sync is now weaker so you even get issues with OSSC. I don't recommend their Saturn cables anymore.

darkman01 Ok thanks a lot for the advice. I also would be interested since when the cables bultje112 mentioned change?

Saturn is one of rare console where S-Video is really good compared to other consoles in the same era. if you have the necessary pieces do try it.

I only tried s-video on my skc-1000 (which has native s-video output and a full video amp board), but on that s-video was nearly indistinguishable from RGB. The colours may have been slightly less sharp but you really had to squint to see any difference.

Can't go wrong with Retrogamingcables.co.uk these days and you can get the exact cable for your needs rather than a one size fits all but isn't quite as good.

I think I ordered from them before some years back and didn't like the cables at all. either them or a different british site, I can't remember exactly. Edit: a quick look at their megadrive 2 cables showed me none with seperated audio from scart.

You can select RCA audio breakout for most of their cables from the menu on the right (or at the bottom presumably on a phone).
