There doesn't seem to be much chat about EAR on here, which surprises me.
Anyway, what do you guys think about it?

Its okay in short bursts but I found once I completed the game I just lost interest. Trying to replay it, once I got past the second level I had lost the motivation to continue. Its the lack of save points that kills it for me. Since its on Taito Legends on the PS3 I sold my Saturn version and just got the cheaper PS version. It's a good run 'n' gun game but there are far better ones on the Saturn. Average at best.

In stark contrast sych It's one of the best games on the Saturn, imo, especially if you like arcade run and gun. It's not easy, by level 3 it's getting fairly difficult, really difficult even. Graphics are detailed and the gameplay is frantic. Also, the music is spot on and very atmospheric. Forget the other ports, its real home is on the Saturn. It is fairly expensive at the moment, £120 upwards, but justifiable. Highly recommended, a total gem... straight up 10/10.

Grabbed a mint copy for 160 including postage, and I got lucky with that price. My Japanese contact showed me the prices it is going for in Japan and it is still rising pretty high. He think it could be firmly around 200 by 2019 :/
From what I have seen, it looks pretty good but I don't want to see to much until it arrives. I do like run and gun games, and the secret agent game-style looks pretty awesome.
I have high hopes for it. The original also looks pretty cool, and I believe you can unlock it (or it's a cheat or something?)
Oh yeah, my contact is also throwing in a Japanese White controller too. Which is a great bonus since I still don`t have a second pad for my Saturn.

I don't know what far better games on the system you're thinking of, because I've played them all, and this one tops them all. About the difficulty of the game, while it's certainly a challenging game. I didn't find much difference between normal and very hard settings. In terms of tips remember to make effective use of your grenades and pay attention to enemy projectiles, as some of them require you to jump to avoid them.

It's a great game but I'd find it hard to justify spending over £100 on something you can play on Taito Legends for PS2/Oldbox.
It probably looks better on Saturn though with RGB SCART on a CRT.....

Assualt Suit Leynos 2, Metal Slug, Loaded, Scud: The Disposable Assassin, Contra: Legacy of War and Purikura Daisakusen are all far superior games and much more entertaining than Elevator Action Returns. EAR is extremley average and gets tedious extremley quickly.

Loaded, Scud and Contra are not even good games. Metal Slug is greatly inferior compared to it's arcade counterpart. As for Leynos and Purikura. Fair enough if you prefer them.

Who told you Loaded, Scud and Contra were not good games? They are far superior to EAR in every possible way. Also I fail to see how Metal Slug being inferior to its Arcade counterpart automatically equals a bad game. Streetfighter Alpha 2, X-Men: Cota, Sega Rally, Marvel Superheroes, Virtua Cop 2, VF2 e.t.c are all inferior to their Arcade counterparts, are those bad Saturn games as well? Saturn Metal Slug shits all over Saturn EAR, whether it be in One player or Two player mode. As for Asualt Suit Leynos 2, it's one of the best Saturn games ever made, EAR is so not on the same level. And Purikura has far more zest, style, playability, weapon variety, charisma, replayability for it to ever warrant a comparison to EAR. But as you say, each to their own.

It didn't do much for me at first but it's grown on me quite a bit since. The true joy in the game is triggering ridiculous chain reactions that wreak all sorts of havoc.

Loaded is an ok game, if you play it one level at a time. Longer play sessions get on my tits a bit.
Scud looks decent, but I've not played it. Contra just looks like garbage to me, but that's not a slight on the game itself. It just doesn't look like it is for me. And Metal Slug.... well, let's just say the sequels are a lot better.

Metal slug is a quality port on Saturn, and a better game than Elevator Action Returns, arcade or Saturn, fact. Other non-arcade ports have been mentioned, and I'm not rating any of them particularly, they lack that arcade feel imo. I reckon they aren't a patch on Elevator Action, which is a quality port of a great arcade game, pure arcade shooting fun, that's what it comes down to for me.

Yeah, Metal Slug isn't a bad game. I think my main issue was that I never played the series previously, and only played the first after playing the sequels. As such, I consider it decent but it lacks something for me. As I say though, I think it is more down to how I experienced it rather than a slight on the game itself.

EAR is a fun arcade shooter with a very distinctive style and "story". Certainly worth a play.
But unless you're a collector, which is a different story, it is just not worth anywhere near its price when you can play it for peanuts/ free on PS2 & Xbox compilations and for free on emulators.

Darius Gaiden isn't anywhere near as expensive as EAR but - again - it's playable on Taito Legends. So if I was to follow my on rule I wouldn't own it. The Taito legends version saves scores as well which the Saturn port does't - but - I prefer playing the Saturn port for some reason.
So it comes down to preferences and how much you are prepared to pay for collectable titles.
