Has anybody played this? It looks pretty cool.
My main question though is whether or not you need that special controller to be able to play it, or whether you can use a regular controller. The controller is pretty pricey so I'll pick it up if you can play it like a normal game!
....although maybe the game isn't as fun without that crazy controller.

I've put countless hours into Densha de Go! EX without ever feeling that my experience suffered because I didn't have the dedicated controller, so I'd recommend giving it a try with the standard pad - once you're comfortable with the setup, it's actually quite enjoyable!

I have a version of it for the dreamcast with the dreamcast train controller. it all looks awesome, but I never really tried it since the game is much harder even than tokyo bus guide (which I did play and finish and love btw) similar to real train driving in japan you have to time everything to the second. a few seconds too slow at a station and you're done. in japan trains arrive on the second, more than 5 seconds slowdown and you it gets announced on the station and more than 15 seconds you get your money back.
