Don’t get on here as much as I’d like but I’m still a lurker!
Anyway finally got my Saturn collection dug out as I had moved house this year and got about an hour an a half into it an went to change game and it wouldn’t load up the disc with the lines on the screen, quick on and off and away I went, got 5 mins in an it died completely-bugger I thought but I knew I’d been pushing my luck because of the disc reading problem....so broke out my spare Saturn out last night, got 2 hours or so in and it died with no warning at all-pretty pissed off as you’d imagine!
So has anyone got any advice of how I could possibly fix them, what to look for etc!?? I’m a mechanic so could have an ok ability to fix this, if not anyone got any spare consoles they’d sell!😂 they are both model 1 which I thought were the more reliable models....

Can you elaborate what you mean about the systems going dead? Did they actually spewed magic smoke, or did they just lock up the game? Do they boot up at all now?
The most common issues are: - after one game session, if you turn the machine off then back on, the machine will start buzzing and have lines rolling over the screen, this is a known power supply issue, the TOP202YAI needs to be replaced with a TOP224YN - the system just locks up randomly, but the longer you leave it on, the less often it locks up - recapping the motherboard can make this problem go away faster, although it doesn't immediately fix it.

Well my original one was doing exactly that, I did read your comments when I searched, I’m going to have a proper look at that now,if I can fix it I’ll definitely try it. The second one did just die out of the blue but I may have smelt that burnt electrical smell but I didn’t see smoke.

Back in the game! Had a wee 20min window while I nipped into town to boots for stuff for my newborn(Thursday 😂) I went to one of my local go to retro game shops, I new he had a single model 2 with no cables etc but when I asked for it he said he had 3 an that didn’t include the one I knew about!-he knows I’m a collector an said do you want one with a box? Hook line an £70 quid lighter, if I ever see them cheap again I’ll be buying them up-i regret passing them up when they were £20 everywhere.
I’ve bought 2 of the modern version of that PWM the TOP224Y so I’m going to try fitting that to my original Saturn first as that had the screen line issues an report back.
