Modern PC TR ports can be played with any standard controller, so control identically to to the console versions.

As far as the game controls on the Saturn , it works fine, certainly no worse than the PS1 (though I do think the PS pad's button layout is better for Tomb Raider, the d-pad is better on Saturn)

Thanks for the info concerning modern PC ports. If there is really Controller support getting the gog Version of TR 1 might be an as well. But I am stil lvery tempted to get pc Version.
PS: Yeah the Saturn Controller works very well with Resident Evil. Although I grew up with the Ps1 Version, I like the Saturn Version and the controlls more. Since I have it, the Saturn I just play this one and never touch the Psx Version again.

I will disagree with the people who say that the graphics have aged badly. It is a beautiful game.
However no, it is not worth playing today. It starts out fine but it's a horrendous garbage game that should go and die in a fire. Get Lupin instead. It's cheaper and better, although it's definitely uglier.

No, Tomb Raider was garbage then as it's garbage now.

If you want to play it, play it on a PC with a controller, you'll have a much better first time experience with it than playing it on the Saturn. The tank controls can be a bit much but if you can work games like Ninpen Manmaru, Resident Evil or Croc, you'll easily get used to it.

Reading some of the criticisms here I can only wonder if people are confusing Tomb Raider with a completely different game. Most notably, the bit about having to be pixel exact is dead wrong. In fact, it's the opposite; Tomb Raider is designed so that most platforming actions have a window of opportunity of about 2 seconds. For example, if you're running towards a cliff and push the jump button 1.5 seconds before reaching the edge, instead of jumping when you pushed the button, Lara will continue running for another 1.5 seconds and jump exactly as she reaches the edge. Some would call this hand-holding, but after playing the game through I've found that it simply takes the guesswork out of platforming and makes the challenge a much more mathematical one, ensuring that the character's responses to control inputs are completely predictable, which I really, really like.
I don't understand what the complaint about the controls is. They make full use of all the Saturn controller's buttons while being intuitive and easy-to-remember as can be. By contrast, I'm playing Tomb Raider: Legend right now, and while it's a good game, I'm constantly getting screwed up by accidentally pushing the wrong button or by pushing the right button and Lara responding with a different action then I intended.
And fair enough if you hate all games which don't autosave every five seconds and use early polygonal graphics, but if that's the case, then why are you on a Saturn discussion forum at all?
No nostalgia is needed to enjoy the game. I played it for the first time three years ago and was blown away. The game has its flaws but they don't really hamper the essential experience it offers. Can't comment on how it compares to the PlayStation and PC versions, but looking at videos I immediately felt that the game was perfectly suited to the Saturn's graphical tone, and I've been very happy sticking with that version. (Also, I think the PC version's ability to save anywhere kind of misses the point. Tomb Raider is supposed to be a high-tension adventure where you have to carefully think through every step you take.)

Well I loved Tomb Raider then and I still do now.
Great game, more puzzle solving than its successors & tricky enough, but not horrifically hard.

I found the controls quite clunky on a recent play, but other than that I still love it. It has an atmosphere that modern games struggle to match. Hope the next Tomb Raider game manages to capture the magic of the originals.

I love the game too the 1st game really captured the experience of exploring tombs. The controls weren't great back in the day but I overlooked that because how amazing the game was to play. It was incredible that a tiny little British studio made such an amazing 3D game My my issue with the game is I think they should have been more save points in the levels. I loved playing this and Exhumed late at night on the Saturn

I remember that level 5 St Francis Folly always gave me a headache!!

I had to use the walk through in SSM, and even found it hard. It was such a joy to play, found the game jumpy in parts too
