I finally got around to trying my Satiator today and.... I can't get it to work at all 🤦♂️ You should check the leds on the back of it, there's a list of different patterns somewhere. It turns out the MPEG connector sucks almost as much as the cartridge connector, so it's possible you have a bad connection. Or you are using it on a VA0 unit which had some BIOS issues (but these may have been fixed since I last checked).

It was due to a H/W bug on my particular, early unit. It will only update with a FAT32 formatted card. On the early f/w it would only start with FAT32 card so that was a problem right there. Now it's updated I can use exFAT but have to update with the old FAT32 formatted card. Not great but I can live with it.
Now it's running the unit's very impressive but has some big disadvantages over a standard ODE namely:-
1) Impossible to use Action Replay cheats/codes with games launched from Satiator. Personally I can't stand e.g Rayman without infinite lives these days. To even get the AR working as a save and 1mb/4mb card with Satiator you have to flash custom f/w to it.
2) Absolutely requires a working CR2032 battery and won't start without it. We all know how if you don't play your Saturn for a bit and come back to it the battery is often flat, but if you just want a quick go you can set the time or not and just play. Not here, you HAVE to have a working battery.
3) Still not 100% compatibility but not far off.
I'd say unless you really really want the CD drive (which to be fair is still useful especially if you collect games) then go with a standard ODE.

On point 1. Apparently if you patch the AR firmware, then start the game from the Satiator, then hit reset right away, that takes you into the AR menu where you can choose the code and start the game. A bit fiddly but better than nothing.

Don't know why you'd ever want to use exFAT format. When no game remotely comes close to being more than 4Gb.

it's a faster and more robust file system especially on bigger storage devices so of course you would choose that if the device said it was compatible with both.
