Okay so I have a 4MB RAM cart but no 1MB cart. Now, say I buy Metal Slug without the 1MB RAM. What im wondering is that is a 4MB RAM cart compatible with a game that requires only 1MB?

hey metalsonic i am not too sure but i would assum some games can use the 4mb if they require the 1mb though which ones i am not sure, i have KoF'97 and that requires the 1mb but it does work with the 4mb but strangely has longer loading times with the 4mb and sometimes gets stuck on the loading screen and requires a reset , so who knows maybe some games didnt have the 4mb code written in and only work with the 1mb.

All the games that require the 1MB RAM cart work with the 4M RAM carts except Samurai Spirits Amakusa Kourin and The King of Fighters '96. They have corrupt graphics.

Also real bout fatal fury will corrupt as well. You can them pretty cheap with a 1mb cart so you might as well pick one up!

Metal Slug will work just fine with either the 1MB or 4MB carts.

Hmmm, so I must retest real bout fatal fury. When I tested it, I didn't notice any corrupt sprites.

It may differ between different consoles and carts, or even copies of the game.
The internals of different models of Saturn to effect the performance to a degree.

i thought KoF and fatal fury had 1MB ROM cart not RAM?
metal slug should work as it needed RAM - my UK Marvel super heroes runs faster with my jap 4MB cart if you turn the option on.

i thought KoF and fatal fury had 1MB ROM cart not RAM? KOF '95 = Game-specific ROM cart; KOF '96, RB:FF = General 1MB RAM cart I can't recall specifically whether the sprites broke up on RB:FF with the 4MB cart, but I believe that it did indeed... I can't double check at this time as my Saturns is across the Pacific Ocean waiting to be shipped over. BTW, metalsonic, didn't you say that you had a 4-1 PAR cart? That should work with all RAM cart games across the board anyway (unless you have the old version, for which there's a simple fix anyway). (edit: corrected to say that RB:FF sprites breaks up with 4MB cart, not 1MB)

Also PAR Carts die after time too so yea after it dies Ill probably end up using my 4MB Cart instead of buying another.

A way to stop it from bending the pins of the cart slot, is to only insert in 1/2 of the way in.
This stops it from reaching the bottom of the pins and bending them into the grooves at the side - although it should be noted that this is easy to repair if it happens.

Also PAR Carts die after time too so yea after it dies Ill probably end up using my 4MB Cart instead of buying another. Yeah, fair enough. Actually, even though I have the option using either, I also use the official RAM carts as opposed to the PAR cart, but for a different reason. I just don't want to bother with flipping through extra menu screens that come on if you have the PAR cart in there. And personally, I don't fully buy the story of 3rd party carts completely screwing your cart slot. I know that the 3rd party carts not having tapered ends can't help, but still. Just based on experience of working with tons of saturns, I'll have to say that the saturn cart slot in general is just the crappiest built cart slot in the history of console gaming next to the original NES. It's rare to come across a saturn -- whether or not the machine had ever been subject a 3rd party cart -- that has a cart slot where you don't have to jiggle & position the cart in a certain way to get it to recognize whatever it's in there the first time around.

I am using a JAP model one saturn and I use the official RAM carts to play games. The Real Bout graphics got messed up with some characters like Duck king and andy. That was using the 4mb cart. With the 1mb cart It ran fine.
I do have an action replay cart which I use to play PAL games on my JAP saturn.
