SCUD Race was less of a clone and more a spiritual successor to Daytona USA that just so happened to recycle many elements (because of its short development cycle, I should point out), and without having the problems of licensing there's no reason why Sega can't finally bring this one to our homes - unless we count the Katana tech demo or bonus tracks in OutRun 2 as getting there first, of course!

Providing the graphics aren't updated, surely a console with as much power as the 360 could handle a 40 player online Daytona - who'd rather not have that?

40 player !!! that would be the most awesome experience ever!!!, there is no doubt it would be possible on 360 with a sturdy enough BB connection, now thats what i'm talking about!

Sadly Microsoft have a policy against re-releasing old games without updated graphics.
I find this rather ironic, considering many of the new stand-alone titles look much more basic than many old games. *cough*MEGAMAN 9*cough*
Still, even upping the resolution with HLE could be considered and improvement.

I wasn't aware that Microsoft had any form of policy regarding classic games being released with upgraded visuals, though it doesn't surprise me considering how fickle their market can be when it comes to graphical superiority. These kind of fools wouldn't appreciate just pure gameplay, so timeless masterpieces such as the 16-bit Sonics will remain on the Wii - a console that doesn't need cutting edge technology to nudge its way under your television! For the record, I've decided the so-called next generation isn't worth buying into just yet. I'll be sticking with my Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 for a while, or at least until the rumoured Wii price cut next year. After all, why should pay over £200 to get the necessary hardware when Nintendo cam make it for less? Besides, it's common knowledge the Wii is little more than a glorified GameCube, and that the remote feature was being planned late into that system's lifespan - why else is there such a hesitation to officially confirm its specifications? Anyway, back to my original point (because I've gone WAY off-topic here):
Even with its graphics improved to 2001 levels, today's connection speeds and the 360's power would be more than capable of managing a MMO version of the original Daytona. Then again, why not upgrade everything from the first game so that it looks more like Battle On The Edge, or how about we get this instead? Surely M$ wouldn't suggest that Daytona 2 looks that dated by modern standards, and as a bonus we could get the Circuit Edition and 2001 courses as well, plus maybe the SCUD Race tracks? Is this really too much to ask, 'eh? If there were more retro packages like that coming out, maybe I'd reconsider my current stance against HD era consoles and finally invest! Until then, however...

But Sega has already released several Genesis games (Sonic, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2) on XBLA. All they added were some crappy filters, but they can be disabled...

I'm with ya on that Anthaemia, i too will not buy into hd era gaming unless there is something to lure me in so far not a dicky bird has made me raise my eyebrows in intrest, except the xbox live arcade downloads but thats not enough coz it needs Daytona and Scud Race and Desert Tank (jokes), but still even if the dremacast 2001 daytona update was brought to xbox live that would be the dogs ballsack and add the 40 player option, would be incredible, one can dream i suppose.

But Sega has already released several Genesis games (Sonic, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2) on XBLA. All they added were some crappy filters, but they can be disabled... That was before the policy came into action, the policy is new. However, HLE could run 3D games for model 2 in HD resolutions, so that could perhaps be considered enough to qualify. As for Wii being better than "HD Consoles" (Keeping in mind that even the PS2 and Original XBOX are capable of HD), I'm not so sure... The Wii only costs Nintendo about £30 to manufacture, the idea that I am going to spend £150 on a £30 piece of equipment makes me lol. I wouldn't class Sonic as being "pure gameplay" is has pretty stylized music and graphics, the graphics haven't really aged. Compare Sonic to Revenge of Shinobi, Revenge of Shinobi looks far more dated because of how they styled the art. Even with the music, Sonic's music hasn't aged much either compared to the likes of Thunderforce (which sounds abrasive and evil if listened to today). I'm not sure that Microsoft's policy is really against "poor" graphics, it is against the same old crap being released again and again. Which I don't really have a problem with. While I like the odd re-release here and there, seeing the same old crap every year gets very tiresome (Sonic, lol?)

That's what I've been doing for a month. I've been playing both CCE and the original back to back every night for 4 or 5 weeks to see if I can get a definative handle on what's actually the better game. It's obviously subjective, but my conclusion is that on the whole, CCE is the far better game. The handling is much better if you put in the time to get used to it. It actually plays very similarly to Ridge Racer with the drifting. CCE also offers more tracks, more cars and generally better visuals. The music is still shite, though. All in my opinion, but interestingly, I was a supporter of the original before doing the tests. CCE is only playable with the Daytona car, I've played it during hundreds of hours with I think great times. The PC release got one track more and the hanling has a bit changed comparing to the Saturn version.
