I just had a quote for a switchless mod and mod chip in my model 1 Saturn from www.chaoticjellygames.co.uk and it was £60 in all. Now i dunno if thats good or not but Rob Webb is selling a japan saturn with modchip for £80 plus postage. which one do you think i should go for ?

I'd say whatever one you want But I personally would go for the entire Saturn, as you will incur the extra cost of having to send your Saturn to ChaoticJelly if you get your current Saturn Modded. Plus I'd get an extra Saturn. Also... £60 for a mod is ridiculous, the raw materials to do the job cost about £30 at the very max.

It's the testing that takes ages even with the simplest of circuits it's possible to spend hours testing it.

Test for a Saturn:
Turn Saturn on:
No fire = good to go.
Fire = No.
Flick switch, Japanese games boot? Check = good to go.
Flick switch, Japanese games cause console to go on fire? = no.
;p

I have an unmodded PAL MK1 and an unmodded White Japanese model (augmented with an AR cartridge) and though they are great to have if I was to do it again I would get one machine modded to the hilt for sheer convenience.
It will always be cheaper to acquire one with mods done than to go through the hassle of acquring a machine and then getting one modded (not to mention extra postage etc.)
£60 does seem a bit steep for a mod but they must be getting the business. Quality work takes time, discipline and a professional approach - and to have the setup to repeatedly do that type of work entails overheads.

£60 is exactly what I charge and is a fair price. Both myself and CJ are proper registered businesses paying tax - mine is a second income so I pay 40% tax. Add on all the running costs of the website and I see 40%-45% of the profit.
Then, there is the cost of the materials, (modchip, switchless board parts etc). Take away the tax and running costs and materials and trust me neither of us are left with much. Put it this way, it is probably less than minimum wage.
As for building the mod board (which isn't a straight forward task), installing and testing - start to finish for a switchless mod it is around 3 hours. And that is when you know exactly what you are doing and have experience fault testing etc. You are also paying for the peace of mind and guarantee. If for some reason the mod developed a fault within its warranty period, we will repair it and brunt all the costs.
I think people should factor all these things before passing judgment.
