having been put off by complicated methods in the past, I found this today: www.retrocorner.net/index.php?Mods_%2F_repairs:Saturn_model_2_50%2F60hz_switch_-_page_1I did it in an hour, and I didnt even take my saturn apart, just took the battery cover off. The only hard part was implanting the switch into the battery cover. If you live in PAL land and import this is >9000% worth doing (and even if you don't import, very few PAL titles are 50hz optimized). This mod enables full speed games with no borders. If you are really lazy, and for *whatever reason* (have modchip lol) find yourself with no reason to play anything but US / JAP games then you don't even need to install a switch, just put a blob of solder across point A and B instead. mainly just posting because I'v done it now and am very impressed with the results. just gotta wait for my 4in1 cart to arrive and im all set ;D

reading the link it seems you have to open the Saturn in order to access those jumpers. I'll be interested how you did without having Saturn apart coz that will save me heaps of time.

just take the battery cover off, you can get to the jumpers through it, though in hindsight i recomment at least taking the top off your saturn, i came close to mealting bits of my case

I will draw the distinction between "Full Screen" and "Full Speed" again.
Many Pal titles were "Full Speed" optimized but not optimized for "Full Screen".
Nights, for example, runs at full speed but with borders, and Street Fighter Alpha 2.
Also, I'd be worried about this mod not connecting the common point to a ground when it's switched, that can cause problems when you electronic interference occurs (Hovers, hair dryers, etc) there is the off chance that your Saturn could flick between 50 and 60Hz every time your wife dries her hair...

hmm, whilst some of the more popular games are pal optimized, the vast majority arent, and no imports are. (and for the ones that are, theres a reason for the 50hz position on the switch ;D) heres a list: www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Cavern/2520/titles.htmlI havent had any trouble with my switch either, although i do keep my consoles on a separate power bar, so only 1 is on at a time.

Anyone know if this can be done to a US saturn? There's a few pal games that don't work properly at 60hz as can be seen on that list. Wouldn't mind giving this a go.

Did anyone try it?
What were the results?

Nope, although I've said before, that list of optimised/"normal" PAL games is an abomination. It doesn't clearly differentiate between Full-screen optimisation and speed based optimisation nd many of the games it classes as "Normal" are actually speed optimised, with borders. When it says "17.5% Faster" on some games I think it means faster than they are supposed to run in some cases. Street Fighter Alpha, for example... Leading me to believe that many people out there are playing PAL games too fast but simply think that is how it was in the NTSC version.

If the game is PAL optimised then running it at 60Hz will probably produce problems. This can range from basic sound/picture synchronisation problems which might not be a big deal through to graphical glitching which might leave the game unplayable.
I haven't experienced any problems with running PAL games on my Japanese Saturn (using a AR cartridge) but I have avoided playing the big releases such as VF2, etc that were optimised. Thankfully NTSC versions of these are dirt cheap to get.
When a game is pushing a console hard, the PAL version of a game has sometimes had a more consistent framerate and less slowdown due to the fact that the machine is producing less frames per second so it isn't all bad.
As long as a PAL game is full screen I tend not to be too fussed. Its not even borders that bother me but the squashed effect you see on badly converted games.

Why would you want to play a game without "Borders" if it's running too fast?
You would not listen to a music CD playing 17.5% faster than it's supposed to or watch a movie running 17.5% faster than it's supposed to... yet most people will happily watch a 4:3 image stretched over a 16:9 screen, which is essentially the same thing as adding borders as far as the shape of the image goes.
People who stretch their 60Hz 4:3 games over a Wide screen TV could easily just hit the crop button on the 50hz version and achieve the same result B-)

My question is: With this mod, can i play NTSC games in my PAL console? No, you will either need to do a region mod also or buy an action replay cartridge. This mod only allows you to switch your Saturn to the correct speed for whatever games you are playing (PAL = 50Hz JAP & USA = 60Hz)
