Hey there, yay finally got my sat today ;D ! It came with a RF video cable(not even a RCA or scart). So does anyone know if it possible to cut off the RF end of the cable and solder on a vga adaptor? I've seen this www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/saturnav.htm . So I'm wondering if I can solder the corresponding saturn pin-out to a vga adaptor, would it work? Thanks.

No, you can't just solder a VGA plug onto the end. When I say can't, I'm sure you can, but you will need an early 90's NEC multisync monitor to use it.
What you need is a VGA Box that upscales AND scan-doubles the video signal.
The Saturn does not output anything that can be viewed straight onto a standard monitor.
The guide you lonk to is for fitting a DB-9 RGB cable, nothing to do with VGA.

Hmmm I see...I see there is a bit of a debate about scart and s-video, anyone know which is better?

There's no debate, SCART and Component are full RGB and the best video signals you can get from the Saturn.

Component is not RGB, it is has the best quality from other inferior methods... RGB/SCART is the win

Hmmm some online articles must be a bit confused on component then, as I'm in the UK I've only ever used SCART

The saturn does not output any sort of signal that can be properly interpereted by a VGA monitor without the use of a scandoubler FACT.
eastbayarb on that forum has a VERY rare NEC Multisync that can handle 15khz video signals (just like various CRTs intended for amiga use)
You CAN of course make the cable, but unless you have a monitor that can sync down to 15khz (unlikely) the cable is useless to you.

I have two such monitors - both lacking cables.

I have a couple of NEC MultiSyncs myself, the problem is I have little attraction to the idea of spending time and money making a cable that will allow me to play my Saturn through a 14" or 15" monitor in the same resolutions as it displays in RGB scart on my big ass Trinitron TV

I've been a bit curious about SCART cables. Living in the US, SCART jacks are few and far between on our TVs. I wanted to get my Genesis S-Video modded but it's the one with the Samsung Encoder and it can't be done. However I've been wondering, if I got a European Mega Drive RGB SCART cable and used a SCART to S-Video Adapter would this essentially give me a picture the same as if my Genesis had an S-Video Mod?

An RGB scart through an SVideo adaptor should give you a reasonably nice pic, I just gave it a go with a scart to svideo block and it looks pretty good to me, it's not as crisp as RGB Scart but much better than composite or RF...

Ok, now the other question, are Genesis/MegaDrive AV out ports universal between regions? I know they are different between models, but is there any difference between regions?

I'm not 100% sure on Genesis or Megadrive SCART leads I'm afraid, I would not have thought so...

all MD's and Gennies are identical, no funny tricks done like Nintendo loved to do... a cable for EU machine will work for JP and/or US machine with no trouble, maybe except RF thingies (those should all be burned....).
