hey guys, picked up an optima6 laser from electronix.com and put it in my model 2, but now if i put a disc in, the drive wont spin. I checked and the laser eye can move up and down, but from what ive read if the laser cannot see a disc it will not spin the drive. i messed with the orange screw a bit but not too much. any other ideas or did I just get a defective unit? thanks.

Welcome to the forum Check the ribbon cables that connect the laser assembly board to the motherboard, they can be very fragile and even if they look fine are often not. Fire your Saturn up with the top casing off and the door sensor taped with something to make it think the door is shut, after you turn it on the Saturn shoud shift the laser to it's center most position. If it does this you can eliminate most motor/assembly issues. You should take a good hour at least adjusting the bias screw from one extreme to the other in tiny increments and re-testing with a disc each time. There are at least 4 more screw pots on the assembly (the model 1 assembly anyway) but I can't find the schematic I had telling me what they all do. Last thing I did a laser replacement in was a MegaCD Mk1 and after hours trying to get is calibrated properly I gave up. Out of curiosity how much did you pay for the laser? Last I looked it was cheaper to get another Saturn for spares as the lasers were around the £30 mark, that was a while back...

On a very remote possibility, it's not want of the super early Model 2's with the Sanyo model 1 laser is it? If so then obviously you now have the wrong laser in it...

Checked the ribbon cable, contacts looked ok and it seemed to be well seated. Checked out the laser with the case open and the laser did exactly what you described, so I guess we can rule out the motor. It is a 64 pin board, pretty sure it's not a sanyo. weren't the sanyo boards brown with a gray spindle? paid about 30USD shipped to get the laser, probably could've gotten another saturn for that price but I was hoping to keep our beloved saturn population from losing another member I will probably mess with the screw more sometime this week. thanks for the help
