Found this beautiful 29'' HD-CRT in a used shop near my new apartment for about $100. Displays 720p and 1080i for new stuff, as well as true SD for the old stuff. Absolutely beautiful display, no matter what I'm playing. Tons of inputs as well: 1x Sony AV-Multi (RGB or Component via TV menu) 2x D4 Terminal (Japanese Component) 3x S-Video 4x Composite Video ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Is that a Laserdisc player, and if so, is it one of the MUSE ones?
I've never been 100% convinced of the standard def LD vs DVD argument... DVD may have a lot of digital artifacts, but SD LD sure as hell had a lot of analog ones...

DVD may have a lot of digital artifacts, but SD LD sure as hell had a lot of analog ones... Yeah, it's a LaserDisc player. It's a rather average player, no MUSE (it was $20). All my LDs were only $2, buying them was actually cheaper then renting the DVDs for a single night.... Quality varies a lot with LD. I have a Star Wars LD from 1985, it looks no better then VHS. But my T2: Special Edition is quite close to DVD quality. I've heard you really need a high-level player to get the most from LD though. On Yahoo Japan, the MUSE players often sell for 80,000yen ($800). But with a direct LD-DVD comparison, I think DVD usually wins. But a lot of DVD transfers are quite lazy. The unedited Star Wars DVDs are direct LD transfers from the SW Trilogy discs, but they ruined the sound, making the LD's superior.

I wish I could find big CRTs locally.... not to mention modern ones... my current 28" Philips was really hard to get my hands on and cost ~80USD... and its at least 10 years old... but image quality is extremely great at least

Probably not, considering Japan is in NTSC (60Hz), and unlike PAL TVs these days which handle both 50 & 60Hz fine, NTSC units generally don't like 50Hz signals.
