...Nintendo... on a Sega game case.
It made me laugh at how silly that possibility would be... but at the same time it only makes me more curious.
If I didn't have other projects I'd be like "Let's do it!"

While we are doing this amazing homebrew, we might as well do this as well:

Friggin' brilliant! Maybe it'll resell the Saturn and bring it back to life to own the 360.

It's not even like FF7 is that demanding either. 90% of the game you are on a pre-rendered 2D background with 3D character models on top. Only hard parts would be the world maps and the Battles, which again wouldn't be too much for the Saturn.

Hmm... how is the Saturn with FMVs compared to the PSX? I know there were some parts where characters would move over top an FMV.
But yes. You're right. I think the Saturn could very easily pull it off if done right.

Well, if it used the MPEG card it would be better than PS1, if it didn't it would have more artifacts, but at the same time it would depend on the quality of code and compression. For example this is Cinepak encoding, notice the graininess around edges and the pixelation at times: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OahHMRT4n3cAt the same time, this is also Cinepak, notice it looks a lot cleaner: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK2sT8223xI

I'm not sure if there were any commercially released games for the Saturn where real time graphics were drawn over video backgrounds, though I seem to recall the mention of Rez and Space Channel 5 originally being 32-bit projects, and since the latter employed this very method in its eventual Dreamcast guise I have a feeling it may have been possible. However, considering the quality difference I guess the format of choice would be either TrueMotion or MPEG with the Video CD Card's help. Of course, there's nothing to say a Cinepak-powered alternative wouldn't have looked good with the right compression and right knowledge of how to make decent quality frames without too much visible artifacting...

Getting off topic but, the PC-FX is the absolute king of graphics on FMV. The system had 7 background layers and any of them could be the FMV layer. You could have sprites behind FMV behind more sprites even. A real shame the system had to fail so badly. As for the Saturn, I don't think FMV was ever the consoles aim. After the SegaCD was hated so much for the FMV games, I think Sega wanted to stay away from it, probably why the Saturn was designed firstly for pure 2D sprite based games (go back to the stuff that sold), and the risky new "3D stuff" was kind of secondary. And its certainly the weakest FMV system of the time (not counting the MPEG card of course) This is all just my opinion though.

No, that was exactly Sega's plan - to create a 2D powerhouse with "modest" polygonal capabilities (enough to reproduce Model 1 software at least) and minimal support for video playback. Can you believe lead hardware designer Hayao Nakayama argued three dimensional graphics were a passing trend, and that many developers would quickly switch back to more familiar visual methods once the market became saturated with gimmicky 3D titles? Ironically, none other than AM2 producer Yu Suzuki wrote his university paper on how virtual reality would become commonplace in the computer industry! Such opposing views would later ruin the company's sense of direction forever...

This is probably off-topic,but I know that this year or early next year,we are getting a new NES game in cartridge form.People still make games for the "retro" systems, which I think is AWESOME!I wish I could do that.

Indeed. I absolutely love seeing support for old consoles. I'm sure if you knew ASM and some electronics you could do it easily. I could be wrong though.
@everyone here who does homebrewing and PCB etching: What kind of education would I need for this kinda crap? It's what I want to get into in the future.
@the FMV discussion: The beginning FMV to Shienryu is the most amazing thing I've seen on the system FMV wise without an MPEG card. Full screen, 60FPS, little artifacting, lots of happenings. It shows that the Saturn CAN do decent FMV if in the right hands.

Yeah, Saturn FMV depends entirely on the code if its not using the MPEG card. As for Homebrew, I personally haven't done any yet but I intend to get in on it. I've been reading the resources at SegaXtreme.
