With the English release of Sakura Wars V coming this winter it's made me consider getting Sakura Wars 1 and 2 for my Saturn. But I have some questions to those who own them.
1) How easy is it to play if you don't speak Japanese? 2) Are their good translation guides on the internet? 3) Anything important I should know before buying them so I don't get scammed? 4) Are the limited edition boxsets worth it?

There are full text translations for I-IV. Even without a translation, they are easy to play, you bascally just wander around and talk to people until the time runs out, and then you go to the next scene. Though they are mostly story games, the battles are just for fun really. So you'd want to use the translations. Nothing to really get scammed on, just don't pay a lot because they are all really cheap these days. LE boxsets depend on what you want. The ST1 Saturn boxes come with a mouse, which is the best way to control them. The Saturn ST2 is just a slip cover. The DC is where the crazy LEs are, but they are meant for fans. Nice stuff if you like the characters, otherwise it's all junk. If you like cheezy anime love dramas with some fun but really easy battles, they are great games. Extremely high budget, and you can play them many times before you see everything. My favorite is part 3. (Paris cast >>>> Japan cast) It's a shame that Part V is the one comming out in English. It's easily the worst game in the series, the plot is terrible compared to the rest of the games. And the new characters suck, it brings the term "cliche" to an all new low... Only reason to play V is for Lachette, I'd been waiting years for her to appear in a game.

Ok, I did a search on Ebay and the Limited Edition boxes for the first game are about $20 and there are 2 different ones.
The price is about the same for the Limited Edition versions of the second one.
For just the games its about $2-$5 for complete sets + shipping. Are these fair prices? If those are fair prices I might just go for the Limited Edition ones for the heck of it as it's not that much more.
Is there a checklist for what all should come in the Limited Edition Box Set? Whats the difference between Type A and Type B for the first one?

Also 1 and 2 got released on Dreamcast, and PSP. There is a Box Set for Dreamcast with all of the DC releases in the series in it ;D
I think there is also a Windows version of many of the games, but they are not so easy to come by.

Well, I don't have a Dreamcast...
So it's Saturn for me for the first 2.

Only difference between the A and B versions is the mouse-pad art. Note the A version, got re-released a 2nd time, so technically the B version is rarer if you care enough.
PSP version of 1 and 2 was gimped. It has less spoken dialog then the Saturn and DC versions sadly.
1-IV were released for Windows. They are around, but not cheap. Personally I like the PS2 version of ST3 because all the extra VMU download stuff is included right on the disc. So you don't have to mess around with the silly download disc that comes with IV.

Well it arrived today and I am having fun playing it. But can anyone link me to a good translation guide? I've found some on Gamefaqs but they don't seem to be 100% complete, they only seem to have specific outcomes of events translated to get a certain out come which limits how much fun you can have with it really.

Man, that's a bummer. Looking at them now, I notice that they both have major disclaimers about the author's Japanese language skills, too. Much better than nothing, but I'd really been thinking that a more comprehensive translation was available. I picked up So Long, My Love recently and have been thinking about popping it into the Wii. Is there any particular value to playing the Saturn games first? I plan to play them eventually but I don't even have them yet, so...

I'm a fan of Sakura Taisen too, although I must admit I haven't got around to completing it yet (so many games, so little time!!). Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying it Trekkie. I just got around to updating my copy of the game (my original is incomplete), but if I had sat down and thought about it I would have gotten myself a LE copy, as I still need a mouse (DOH!!). Regarding a walkthrough, if ANYONE has a complete guide - please, PLEASE post a link. That is all.

I actually got both 1 and 2 with my Saturn when I first got it, and I hadn't heard of the series at all until then. It's a fun game series, and while I haven't really sat down and played either of them, from simply messing around with them for a few minutes I really should sit down and play sometime...

You don't really need a walk-through for ST. Game moves at a set pace. Like in the parts where you go to rooms to talk to people. You have a limited amount of time, (each girl you talk to takes 5 mins). So just waste enough time and you'll get through the game. Easy way to get the girl you want is you Oogami's "protect ability" on her then send her to battle by herself, her love level will skyrocket this way.
