I am thinking about getting shining force 3 or panzer dragoon saga but they are both very expensive.
What is the best Saturn RPG to get that is worth the money? I have a UK, US and JPN Saturn so can get games from all regions, but the thought of sitting with a translation guide for a game really bores me so I would prefer a game in English.

Shining Force 3 is awesome and addictive. Never tried Panzer Dragoon Saga... but another good one is Dragon Force. There's also Magic Knight Rayearth... but that one's definitely not for everybody. I hear Shining: The Holy Ark is pretty good too. Personally, I think to get the most out of Saturn RPGs, you should try picking up another language since all the good stuff comes out of Japan. Like, Grandia, and Langrisser looks interesting too. Then of course there's Chaos Seed (which is a really interesting case) and Princess Crown. Princess Maker 2, while an odd one, is pretty neat, but research it first before grabbing it for the $5 it asks for. Right now I'm in the middle of learning Japanese because like you, I hate guides, and I got really fed up with not being able to understand the fun games. I'm retarded when it comes to languages (it's taking me four times longer than the average person) but if I can do it, so can you. That little bit of patience and dedication will give you access to a much greater library of great stuff!

As much as I love Shining Force III (my avatar Synbios is a character) you should play Panzer Dragoon Saga. Yes, Shining Force III is addictive as hell but PDS is more so. I've never used a guide or walkthrough for PDS so I'm still finding things/events I haven't seen before. If there's a must play for the Saturn this is it.
And no I didn't hype it up to put it up for sale soon ;D
Shining the Holy Ark is fun, Magic Knight Rayearth is fun despite it's cutesy look and Albert Odyssey is a fun but a basic run of the mill rpg.
I have the same aspirations to learn Japanese as Yart-san but using a script isin't that bad. I still use them as a matter of fact.

I say Shining Force 3.
As good as PDS is, I enjoyed SF3 more. Plus if you want more after you fininshed, you can pick up scenario 2 and 3 of ebay and play them in english now too.

I say save up for both. They're both clearly within the top 5 of the best Saturn games ever made. But if I had to pick one I'd go with Panzer Dragoon Saga.
If you can't stretch you budget that far for either of the games then I would get either:
Shining The Holy Ark Magic Knight Rayearth Dark Saviour Albert O
If you decide to take the plunge into jap games then I'd go with:
Grandia and Princess Crown. Wachenroder is nice too

Although I'm not all that into RPG's myself, but Panzer Dragoon Saga is a good game and really addictive game play. I really enjoy playing it.
I have also been playing Princess Crown with a translation and am enjoying it as it is the first game I played with a translation guide.

I have also been playing Princess Crown with a translation and am enjoying it as it is the first game I played with a translation guide. My first was SF III scenario 2. I had played it 3 or 4 times already but to have a better sense of the story was awesome. Glad you're enjoying Princess Crown. A couple of people have mentioned it now...I may have to check it out soon.

But is it so story driven that you need a guide? I thought it was more of an action game with some RPG elements. Something in the lines of Guardian Heroes.

Its nothing like Guardian Heroes. Princess Crown is a pure RPG. The uniqueness in the game comes from its battle system which is set up like a 'VS Fighter' Fantastic game and with some of the most amazing 2d graphics I've seen on the Saturn. Still yet to complete it due to me being on an RPG strike until I find a Saturn Floppy Disk Drive because I no longer trust my 4in1 cart.

there are a few good Japanese rpg`s for the Saturn. The problem is they`re to expensive.
Here a few good Saturn rpg`s
- Panzer dragoon saga - *Shining Wisdom - Dragon Force # Magic Knight Ray Earth - *Magic knight rayearth
These games are not rpgs. But the gameplay contains a lot of rpgs elements.
To answer your question: The best RPG to get is Suikoden 2 on the first Playstation:p

Too expensive? What Japanese rpg's are you referring to? Most of them if not all are dirt cheap.
You can pick up all these jap RPG'S for around about:
Grandia=£8 Wachenroder=£10 Sword & Sorcery=£10 Black Matrix=£10 Lunar SSS=£10 Lunar Eternal Blue=£10 Shining Force 3 Scenario 2=£20 Shining Force 3 Scenario 3=£20 Sakura Wars series usually around £20 Princess Crown=£25-£30
So unless you consider these titles expensive I don't know what jap titles your referring to

If you are limited to English games, then Shining the Holy Ark is my favorite. Just a truly solid game, each dungeon has something new to mess with. The Working Designs games are always fun, though their translation work is total love or hate. Moving into JP only games, Langrisser Tribute is the best SRPG pack that will ever exist, very easy to play, though the interface is fairly Japanese heavy. Black/Matrix is a personal favorite, but if you don't understand the language you are really missing out on one of the most twisted stories ever. I like Sakura Taisen, but they are NOT RPGs in any form what so ever. They are love adventure games, with a silly battle system for fun.

Speaking of Black Matrix. I was lucky enough to find an online translation guide for half the game. I just love the battle system too its so awesome.I've befriended a new jap guy down the road and I'm hoping at some point he can come down and translate the game for me. I may have to pay him

If you want a RPG in english then pick between Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force III, and Panzer Dragoon Saga. I find them to be the best RPGs on the Saturn and picking between them will come down to preference.
Shining Force III - Tactical RPG with an epic story. If you like this kind of game get this first.
Panzer Dragoon Saga - Turn Based RPG with some action elements. My favorite RPG. Costs a lot of money though.
Shining The Holy Ark - Turn based RPG in first person. You go through a bunch of really big dungeons in the game.
Albert Odyssey - This game f***ing sucks.
