One thing I haven't seen much mention of over the years that I do feel deserves more discussion is the sheer difficulty of those time-unlocked bonus tracks in STC - did anyone else find the cone challenge in particular near impossible to complete without resorting to a snail's pace? One day I'll hopefully go back and master these, just as I did with the main game. Finally, I should also point out that I've managed to crack this notorious title without even considering the fact I could modify the controls and car setup from their default profiles! Time-unlocked bonus tracks!!? - I was under the impression that the extra tracks were something to do with the on-line side of things!! That'll teach me for not keeping a save file AND for not re-reading those SSM features in many years - DOH!! As for completing the Championship without modifying the set-up - what can I say? Anthaemia - you are a Monster lol!! ;D Anthaemia. you either need to write a book or blog about what you've heard/seen/read and the rest of your thoughts. I really enjoy your posts! I'm with Synbiosfan 100% on this one - It'd be a darn sight better than that self-published book on cancelled games I keep seeing dotted about, that's for sure.

Those hidden circuits were only available for a day each, though you could always unlock them to enjoy over and over - providing you know the dates to enable them, of course! However, your lap times won't count (obviously, as the contest has long since ended), though I guess we could host our own table of records here online. Now that I think about it, does anyone know if Sega ever gave out any prizes to the best racers as a result of this particular networking feature? Also, I gather my ongoing written masterpiece isn't quite the low profile and highly secretive project I'd planned it to remain for a while longer yet...

Had a go at this in an arcade in Rhyl the other week. Crash, crash, crash I went.

I read this on wikipedia; "Strangely enough, two rally cars from Sega Rally Championship made a special appearance to the home console versions, then known as the Toyota Celica GT-Four (ST205) and the Lancia Delta HF Integrale." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Touring_Car_ChampionshipAnyone manage to unlock those cars?

I'm not sure of exactly how you unlock these, but I think you have to earn both awards. In other words, they are accessed only once you've completed both Arcade and Saturn Side in every single mode in first place. I seem to recall Expert Mode being particularly hard, though not a patch on the truly challenging feature where you need to complete a full Championship using the prototype with your recorded AI data - that took me forever, and even then I'm surprised the car didn't just bounce from one side of the track to the other!

Right. Plug the Saturn steering wheel into port two, go to options and choose key config, press x y z and start at the same time on the wheel et, voila! more tracks, cars and stuff.
I finished in first place in the championship with the Sega Proto car (Le Mans type) but the Sega Rally Celica is pretty tail-happy for tarmac-based racing.
Finally, STC is playable.

Finally, STC is playable. I never thought this combination of words would ever be written.

I got this game yesterday. Man, the cars handle terribly but as others have mentioned, there's something about this game that is making me continue to play. Maybe it's the cheesy techno music or perhaps it's the hope that there is a good game somewhere to be found? Maybe if I tweak the controls a bit...
With regards to the online leader board, does anyone know how to decrypt the codes that you get after you finish the arcade mode? If someone did then surely someone could design a website in which players could upload their times. That'd be pretty cool :-)

STTC is definitely one of those games you need to get into "the zone" to play properly. And it MUST be played with the analogue pad, otherwise it's unplayable.
I played this fanatically when it was released and believe I finished it - that extra arcade circuit was horribly difficult! The entire game has a very steep learning curve and was frustrating, yet strangely fun.
I believe the only way to access the cars from SEGA Rally was to use an arcade racer.

No, you can definitely unlock the Sega Rally vehicles without having to use the Arcade Racer code - I've managed it the same way in both the Saturn and PC versions! Most people can finish the various Arcade Side modes easily enough, but the real trick is building up your AI to a point where it can finish a Championship tournament on the Saturn (or PC, for that matter) Side in first place. By the way, isn't the Japanese website for Sega Touring Car still available in archive form? I can only hope that someone figures out the code system and produce a new ranking table from this...

I've just finished playing the US NTSC version of this game and WOW what a difference! The pal version has some INTENSE slowdow nand frame rate issues but the US one seems much smoother. Sure it's not a solid fluid fps rate at all times but it's barely noticeable when compared to the PAL version we had!!! Insane!
Heck using the STANDARD D PAD I managed to place 1st!! It's insane! This game is awesome!

Might have to try the game in my Japanese Saturn then and see if it runs any better.

make sure your copy is an NTSC version so it runs at 60hz properly. It's a huge difference to the pal versions i used to play before moving over to NTSC collecting wow!
