I'm planning on getting some text-heavy games in Japanese as a part of studying the language. I guess the obvious choice would be an RPG or a text-adventure/dating sim, though in this case I'm looking for something more simplistic so for now I'd focus on the latter.
So if anyone had any experience with these, what would you reccomend? It'd nice if the game let me control the text scroll speed, without "auto advancing", otherwise it'll be hard to keep up, voice acting would be a nice feature too (I assume most of such games have it), other than that I don't have any requirements really. So far I only know that Tokimeki Memorial series looks pretty interesting, but judging from the videos it seems like it doesn't give you much control over the text speed...

I'm not sure if you want Japanese themed games only, but I bought the Japanese version of Myst a couple of months ago, and it is completely in Japanese (obviously). It's both dubbed and has all text re-written in Japanese, without having to worry about text scroll speeds. I guess it would be good if you wanted to play the game in English first then play the Japanese version, so you'd have a sort of familiar atmosphere as you are learning and know what is going on. Then again, that is if you haven't already played Myst in English yet, which I highly recommend. The first Darkseed would be good as well, with voice acting in English and text in Japanese.

Isn't that game pure Kanji?

Japanese is never pure Kanji. It would be unreadable. ST is normal Japanese for the most part, but the plot is really simple and easy to understand. Lots of voice overs, and there is a full translation text if you really need it too.

Japanese Grandia 2 is the game you need: no auto advancing and voice acting in japanese if I correctly remember. Guardian heroes is fine too but no voice.
But remember, japanese in video games can be very different form everyday japanese, you have to be carefull to not take wrongs habits. IMO dramas are far better for studying this language.

I've been learning japanese since September at the University, to be able to play all those text advendures and rpgs that are exclusive to Japan. I've picked Grandia, but it is really hard to understand it without a english guide. It appears that there's a long way to go until I'm able to understand japanese text in videogames. Probably after I finish my course (which will take 2 more years, and a lot of study)!

How about Lunar 2 Eternal Blue? Its a good game, and I believe an English version was released for either PS1 or SS. You could play both the English and Japanese versions to get a good understanding, like Akirashin said. You could try out the dating games, but I'm pretty much sure that most of them are not released in English. The dating game considered good for the Saturn in Japan is Yu-no, but it could get a bit pricey. Kakyusei was one of my favorite game when I was a kid, but thats because friends and I where so curious about porn in home console games back then! I agree that Sakura Taisen (wars) is also an awesome series if you like the simulation type games. Sakura is cute too

All of the scenarios of Shining Force 3 have a translation script available on the internet so they may be worth a go.

Yeah, I liked Dokoku Soshite! I wanted that game ever since the release in 1998 or so. Couldn't buy it back then because I was too young, but I was able to buy it and play it 2 years ago. Quite awesomely dark theme in that game.

Sonix, if your still interested in playing Japanese text heavy games for the Saturn. I've got 2 strategy guide book for "Sakura Taisen 2". I mistakenly bought a second book thinking I didn't have one! (what an idiot I am) Anyways, I'm willing to give this book away for free (I will ask you to pay shipping though) If your interested, give me a shout Thought it would be a nice text book, or way to learn the language. You probably can find the "Sakura Taisen 2" game for super cheap on ebay too.

I so happened to look at my shelf today, and just realized that the Sakura Taisen 2 strategy book was the version for Dreamcast! Although the Dreamcast game is a direct port of the Saturn, and the content of the game is identical, I didn't want to let you down in the last minute, so I posted this here. Anyways, let me know when you want all the stuff
