I can see the charm of a switchless regionmod, but it's completely pointless on the Saturn since you have the mpeg card slot space to store any amount of switches comfortably (and if you use small switches, you won't even block the mpeg card).

I don't understand it neither... Retro, maybe you are not fully familiar with the functionality of seb's switchless mod for the Saturn. The reset button controls everything using time cycles. So a quick press is just a normal reset, nothing else happens. If you hold it for 0,5sec then 50/60Hz switches on the fly when the console is switched on, no problem. When you hold it for 1sec, 2sec, 3sec...the regions are changed shown by changing LED. This takes effect when the console is turned off and then turned on again. So regions are not bound to 50/60Hz. That's what makes it so cool Ah, that's one I'm not familiar with, no. That must use a PIC (or Atmel) chip, then. This guy didn't do it first as you claim, then. The original switchless mods (and not just for Saturn) used a simple logic data selector. Much easier to do (and a bit cheaper), but perhaps a bit less versatile. I'm still not a fan of such mods, though. You're still switching under power - granted, the console goes into a reset state at the same time, so hopefully it doesn't have any effect. Still, that's all a bit convoluted. If I want 50 or 60 Hz, I can flick a switch - same for country selection. No cycling through patterns, no need for a new LED (which still means drilling a hole if you're going to mount it properly) and no accidentally holding it down too long/short when I meant to switch the other function. I'm impatient, so such a thing would annoy me! Of course, the other answer is a BIOS swap.

Yes you are right. There were switchless mods before seb's mod which indeed uses a PIC. Here is a link to the old mod: www.gamesx.com/importmod/sat_switchless.htmBut since it was not so well documented as on the site of mmmonkey it seemd a little bit tricky to me Drilling a hole for LED is not necessary. You can (have to) replace the old LED with the 3-color LED. I agree that using switches is more simple and faster. That's why I exclusively have a 2-switch Saturn in use. The switchless mod I did only for testing purposes and because I had some time to do handicrafts...

My old CEX switched Saturn that I had back in the day had the region switch accessed via the cartridge slot that cycled back or forth between numbers. With 3 different regions but at least 6 different numbers (may have been 10, I forget) with PAL on #6 it wasn't very efficient so the switchless mod is a big speed upgrade from what I was used to Holding the reset button is also easier for me than having to reach around the back. As always, your mileage may vary! Personally I wouldn't trade my switchless Saturn for anything and I love it to bits.
