Thanks for the link, that was a good read. While basic emulation is great for certain devices (PSP, DS, and cellphones for example) I think its very important to try to recreate an emulated experience as accurately as possible if the original hardware and software are not readily available. To me the biggest problem that remains for certain games is not using the original controller but that will usually be the case.

I like Byuu, his work is especially important in relation to rom hacks: There are a lot that only work on ZSNES but not on real hardware. The SNES scene is a bit of a mess to put it politely.
Funny how his devotion to accuracy is something I appreciate a lot yet I hate the way the MAME devs tackle the same thing.

Sometimes it pays to get the derivative builds of MAME if playing the games is what you want to do. Shmupmame and Mameplus spring to mind.

The only option on OS X is MAME OS X and that is 2 years out of date Luckily it does what I need it to do but the choice of screen effects could be better. If you want to keep up to date on Linux and Mac you are expected to compile the SDL and a frontend, something only real software nerds know how to do. I am sure if I did do that half my roms wouldn't work with it for no bloody reason anyway. Silly me for wanting to use MAME for playing games on I guess!

I juse use wine, ok you're running an emulator in an emulator but if your mac is powerful enough you shouldnt see many probs. SSF wot run properly that way but it does run pretty nicely through parallels.
I've run a lot of emulators for classic OS through sheepshaver as well with no problems.

Sheepshaver is something I wish I could get to work so I could play some OS9 games. Then again maybe it's for the best that I can no longer play Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3... so addictive.

Wine's not an emulator so the overhead shouldn't be that great. My friend got the Model2 emulator running through VMWare Fusion on his mac.
Really sounds a lot less hassle to just have a PC.

Really sounds a lot less hassle to just have a PC. Why does having an entirely separate systems sound like less hassle? If I get major problems it takes 30 seconds to reboot my mac into native windows 7.

I was really into emulators in the early days, I was a poor student and loved the idea of playing everything on the PC. nowadays id much rather play the real thing, Its a bit of a faff but I definitely get more out of the games. So ive got many different systems, and yes its more hassle, but its way more fun

Yep I couldn't agree more, you're talking to someone who spent months of research and more money than I care to remember so that he could have his original consoles connected and looking good on my nice big LCD, as that article shows, you really can't beat the real thing.
Plus, there's something unique about physically connecting the cartridge and powering it all on that even makes me want to continue collecting Megadrive/Genesis games now I have an Everdrive. I guess that's the collector in me. Of course, emulation will continue to be important for allowing everyone else to continue enjoying games on newer hardware.

yeah i think a lot of people get back into 'retrogaming' via emulators, it has its place, helps keep things lively.... dunno about an LCD tho gimme a nice big goldfish bowl heavy ass CRT any day.

Nothing beats a CRT, if you have the space, sadly I don't, hence my quest for the best alternative
