Well I've recently started using SSF to play my Saturn games since it's now a perfect alternative to using real hardware. It's great to see Saturn emulation being almost PERFECT. There may be some obscure games which may not run right but everything I've thrown at it so far as played PERFECTLY!! Here's some footage of Sonic R I'll be adding more game footage shortly! Here's some footage of Sega Rally on SSF 0.12 R3 ... and some Sonic 3D on SSF 0.12 R3 NiGHTS Into Dreams on SSF 0.12 Beta R3 Sonic World (Sonic Jam) on SSF 0.12 R4

It's far from perfect, especially for PAL games... And there are dozens of bugs that have remained unfixed for years.

Metal Slug is extremely far from perfect mate.
I tried just this game on the emulator and then decided to leave it there.
I look forward to the day when emulation really is almost perfect and you dont have to pretend to load a virtual game disc.

Really? Well every game I've thrown at it works fine, the most important titles at least such as Sega Rally, NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon, Zwei and Saga etc?? Sure some obscure titles might not work the best but i've honestly had no issues yet with anything I've tried?
What sounds are missing? From what I've seen they're all there?
I'll post some more footage up tonight.

I'll post some more footage up tonight. I've tested the full pal and usa library and only about 80% worked good or with minor issues, the rest either didn't work or worked but with huge problems. This is not counting minor stuff that hasn't been unfixed for ages (like FM sound). It also doesn't emulate some more exotic tricks (like paletted gouraud shading). I'll check Metal Slug again, there are two alt versions of that and there are rumors that it doesn't work on late saturns. edit: checked Metal Slug, and it plays just fine... the earlier revision of the game has different sound balance though, so some sound effects are not heard right in that due to the music being louder. Also, it seems to have a few minor graphic glitches too (subboss on mission 2).

I've noticed with PAL games they run at 60HZ so sound tends to be out of sync as well as screen issues. Only noticed this with the pal version of sega rally and sonic r however since I stick with NTSC versions for obvious reasons. FM sound? As in the sound from the saturn itself which NiGHTS uses? Only time I've heard an issue is on elliots first stage, one of the flutes sounds a little flat but honestly other than that this emulator has been flawless for me, sure like most emulators there may be a TINY little issue like maybe a menu music lagging for a moment then working fine after exiting it or whatever but seriously, this emulator is the perfect alternative to real hardware if the day comes where your console breaks or they become very rare due to the high demand these days etc. Truly impressive stuff

PAL games run fine in PAL mode but do remember that the emulator does per-game settings, so you need to change the game to PAL, exit, and restart first. For the record, if you run PAL games in NTSC mode on a real saturn, most of them act up in similar ways (screen cut off at the bottom being the most common issue for games which were optimized for full screen). Some other PAL titles suffer from errors though - Virtua Fighter and Remix have random shaking, a bunch of games have their bottom cut off (House of the Dead, Rampage World Tour, half the Sega Flash demos), the Bootleg Sampler VF2 demo has no sound, and even the bios thinks that its in ntsc mode despite being set to PAL. And there are also many titles that never worked (Doom, Die Hard Trilogy, NBA Live 98, Revolution X), or worked ONCE only (Croc), or have a recurring issue that is fixed once but then regressed to later (X-Men COTA, Whizz, Toshinden URA, Rayman, Bug, Daytona USA) and these are just from the top of my head, the stuff that I do a quick test of whenever a new version comes out. Plus, games need per-game compatibility settings too: you can't just set the emu to use the "full compatibility" setting, because even that glitches up some games that otherwise work fine.
By FM I meant the Frequency Modulation part that the saturn sound chip can do. Check the intro of Virtua Fighter Kids, or any menu effect in Fighters Megamix, and there are many more small cases. But it seems the sound dsp is not perfect either, for example at the pitch control function in the bios cd player.
Oh and you need a fast quad core to run the emu at full settings. Not a problem nowadays, but not because of the emulator itself.
SSF is good, but in no way a perfect alternative to a real saturn.

Ah I see, well it's odd, I mean every game that I've thrown at it using FULL EMULATION SETTINGS has run fine for me! Honestly! Which is why I praise the emulator. It's not a perfect alternative by any means but it's certainly a fantastic substitute in my book I'm aware some games have certain issues for sure though, but then most emulators have this issue, EPSXE is a perfect example... Different strokes for different folks though

Try VF Remix (ntsc) or Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter with the full setting. One has the arena randomly jumping, the other randomly locks up. Both works fine in standard mode.
There are actual perfect emulators out there that don't have "certain issues" like some games not working properly - check bsnes or kega for example, they all run all games fine and they only get problems when you do insanely specific things that only homebrew hackers would (like abusing the megadrive palette switch pixel artifact to draw images). SSF is not one of those perfect emulators.

Interesting. I tend to stick to the usual Saturn titles which may be why I've never noticed issues since more obscure games seem to have issues in that regard. Yeah I've seen them and understand I guess using the word perfect was a little premature, but being able to play my favorite Sega Saturn games on my PC without any issues is a fantastic thing, at least for me
