Hi all,
I was wondering if there was a nice guide that could highlight how to get started on Saturn homebrew. Things like the kind of operating system I need, what development kits to use and how to acquire them, I find bits and pieces over the net but nothing really consistent or in order.
Me and a few friends have taken up a project to create an original rogue-like RPG for the Saturn, at this stage a RPG maker demo is probably what we'll do first but the main idea is to create a Saturn release/port, full packaging and all (like Pier Solar for Mega Drive). Still veryyy early in development, but we got concept art, music tracks, world layouts etc but all very early and primitive.
Thanks for reading!

Awesome! Can you show us something? Even early and primitive would be fine. Or at least tell us what's the title of your game? And what about music tracks? Are they originals or you just found them somewhere? I would like to help you with your problem, but I know nothing on the subject. I doubt that FAQ will ever exist. Still, good luck to you!

I think every Saturn home brew dies before release unfortunately.
I've searched the subject plenty of times and found nothing pretty much.

^Wow that is an excellent find! I'd love to see if I can find this somehow. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. The music tracks are originals, being composed by a friend, it's stoner blues music at the moment. It's going to be a steampunk style world. All just ideas at this stage, playing around with RPG Maker (surprisingly easy to use). It's titled Project N.H.K at the moment. Yea these projects have a high failure rate but it's something I'm not going to abandon, even if it takes years for something to come of it.

making steady progress here, we got some more tracks down, as well as scenarios, characters, concept art etc. Still researching more dev tools for the Saturn, at this stage trying to work out a rogue-like engine on RPG Maker. I think pretty soon I may share more details here!

I dip into developing something for the Saturn every few years, prepare yourself for some long nights of utter frustration. There's a very good reason there's little to no home-brew for the system, but I wish you the best of luck. This may also be of some assistance: www.rockin-b.de/windows-saturnorbit.html

You might check out libyaul: github.com/ijacquez/libyaulI've been helping on that when I can. It promises to be good for homebrew without needing the old Saturn libraries. The toolchain is a new GCC toolchain rather than those old Windows tools. I plan to use libyaul for my own Saturn homebrew once reading files from CD gets done.

Good to hear you're still working on it. So the game is rogue-like RPG set in a steampunk universe? I think you Do need a lot of time for this project. Creating a playable world is one thing, but creating an actually interesting non-linear playable world... is a huge challenge. But from my point of view playing a game like that on my Sega Saturn would be super nice. So don't drop it. I want to have at least one steampunk rogue-like RPG in my SS collection

Thanks for the responses and tips guys! all appreciated.
Slowly but surely it's coming along, something that me and the guys are keeping at the back of our minds. We got 6 people on it at the moment working on different aspects.

6 people, working on the game?! You are lucky... Usually it's a big problem to find people, willing to work "for fun", not for money...

yea they're all good friends and so it was pretty easy! but we are doing this voluntarily and so it's a slow burn process. Def in need of more artists and a sprite artist for sure.

It's all right - I've been working on my little project for 15 months already and I think I'll need a year more. Don't expect fast results - especially if your game is an rpg.

Wasn't there a new set of libraries from SEGA towards the end of Saturns lifespan? Werent they used to develop Shenmue also?
I remember reading they were created to ease the process of getting the most out of the hardware..
But by all means, open-source tools is definately the way to go if serious about developing for the Saturn, so we dont piss of SEGA and end up being sued..
