Came across this interesting site today. This guy is some hacker dude and has mapped out the entire technical details of the Saturn's CD-ROM drive. Also, even more interestingly he has created his own Saturn modchip. He has supplied a full schematic of the board and also has the needed firmware available for downloading. So, really anyone with a solder iron and some patience can build their own modchip! www.crazynation.org/SEGA/Saturn/cd_tech.htm

Most of the stuff is useless for me too. But, reading a schematic isn't too difficult as long as you don't let it overwhelm you. Also for the tech-heads there is a wealth of information that should be made available wherever Saturn fans hang out

Sorry to bump, but I really want to build this. Does anyone still has a copy of the firmware?
Seems like even archive.is is failing me and I can't retrieve the firmware code.

I though it might involve a microcontroller, not carpet remnants!

I got it from a friend. Actually, this is quite old. Seems like the domain expired and this carpet seller bought it.
I'm gonna try and build it. I'll let you know about the results.

Excuse me for necroposting! That website is unfortunately down! Are there a backup? Do anyone did it? Are there other DIY modchips out there? I'm a novice electronics student and very interested in console modifications, from 8 to 32bits. I have a small collection of them, I want to mod and fix them. Edit: I used Web Archive and found most of it is mirrored... web.archive.org/web/20111012135550/http://www.crazynation.org/SEGA/Are there any news in the DIY electronics Sega Saturn scene?
