A friend of mine has just sold his Japanese Saturn collection, obviously being his friend did score me some very nice "mates rate" prices on some of the games and as I'd bought a fair few he through in his CDR copy 'Psychic Assassin Taromaru' (a game neither of us have bought due to it's expense) It's a nice copy with full printed covers and a label and all that but unlike him my Japanese Saturn isn't chipped...
Now today I was in town and saw a UK MK2 console with 2 official pads and VF2 for £12.99 and have been thinking about getting it just to chip in order to play this back up...
My question is: If I buy this UK console, chip it and get myself an Action Reply cart will I come across any problems in the 50/60hz department? Does either the modchip or the AR cart bypass this and displays the NTSC signal correctly? Or am I going to be stuck with borders??
Thanks, Si

Buy the moded saturn of rob webbs site, £59 and converted by the uk master........ by the time youve bought the mod and busted a saturn( possibly) trying it yourself, probably be cheaper...... home.clara.net/robwebb/shop/saturn/saturn.htm

LOL! I'm a electronics engineer by trade. I think I may have the skillz needed to solder the 1 wire and insert the ribbon cable!! I'll get the chip off Rob but I'm going to Play-asia for the AR cart... they're only £12 there, Rob is charging £18!
Although if I'm going to be stuck with borders buying another Japanese machine is likley what I'll do... or at the very least chip mine.

My machines are not chipped, but I manage to play CD-R titles in a 'try-before-you-buy' fashion using an AR cart and the infamous swap-trick.

Think alan partridge with corby trouser press........
£59 for a pre modded white saturn is a good deal though..........

It used to drive me mad back in the days of the PS1 back before they discovered the CD Player swap... actually would that work on a Saturn?? Are you swap tricking a PAL Saturn??? Are you getting borders on Japanese games?? Si

You need a spare saturn you can unscrew and whip the entire top off for playing games, makes the swap trick a piece of piss.

If you need any modchips fitting or anything like that no worries obiv you'd have to supply the chip and stuff, but I can fit most modern chips, am always working at the mo' got 6 Wii's to do before Saturday! It's a nice bit of cash in hand which always comes in handy with a new baby!! Shame I didn't know you a year ago... I lived in Manchester then! For about 6 months, near St Mary's hospital! Just off the curry mile... £60 for a white saturn is a good price his picture doesn't work though so I can't see if there's any yellowing, I actually kind of like the idea of my chipped console and my virgin machine looking totally different though! It's be nice to have a black one! I'm a little neurotic though so I'd HAVE to spray the white AR cart black to match! Si

I have the door sensor post taped in a position that as such, the Saturn thinks that the door is closed whether it is or not. The swap trick is a piece of p1s5 once you get used to the timing. You don't have to do it quickly like the you tube videos would have you believe. I take my time and do it slowly and carefully. As long as you swap CDs over in the time in between the region check and laser returning to the start position.

Just go with a modchip, its about as simple as a mod can get.

Thanks, Si Since you know some electronics, you can eliminate the borders/slower gameplay problem with this 50/60Hz switch mod: www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/saturn5060.htmAnyway, if you have the system open, you might as well do a 3-country switch mod, which will pretty much eliminate the need for a Pro Action Replay cart. www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/saturnregion.htmI also partially did some of those mods on my saturns ->here<-. And IMO, the money spent on the modchip (to bootup CDRs without hassle) is well worth the investment.

I did a 50/60hz switch mod a few years ago on my SNES so I can't see me running into may problems... Si P.S. You own switch mods look fantastic! Think I'll be using black switches too if I can find them!

Yeah, as far as I know, the PAR cart only defeats the region protection scheme. (don't quote me on that, though.) I'm assuming that playing Japanese games on a UK saturn with a converter cart like the PAR WILL give you borders on top & bottom. If I'm wrong on that, please correct me anyone.
