As I mentioned in another thread I now have 4 dead model 2 PAL saturns, I also have two more working model 2s I have had longer than all the others and had no problems with. Well, on opening them all up I have discovered that all of the dead models have a Version A9 motherboard inside, the two working models have a version A and A7 motherboard. All the Saturns with the A9 board crash in the middle of the startup animation, with or without a disc. So I can only conclude that there is some sort of fault with the later A9 motherboards?!

Sounds like an obviously common problem... could even be an easy fix! Is it hanging and displaying a frozen image or is it resetting and trying to boot again/powering off?

the startup animation runs about half way then skips back and forth, all 4 do this. Strangely with the batteries out they still do this as opposed to going straight to the language/time/date screen

So it's essentially trying to boot a disc all the time? Even without a disc on the hub?? Have you tried cleaning the pin ribbon connecting the laser hub to the main board?? Sometimes these ribbons crack and chip, something like that could cause a problem like this...

yep, even tried swapping the laser assembly and cables with the other systems, its not actually getting to the point where it boots a disc though as it never finishes the startup animation.

If it skips at the boot animation, have you tried pressing start to skip them? Probably won't help I know, but you never know.

Right... With a game in will it make an attempt to read it or not? Nope, as I said gets half way throught the startup anim, no laser movement then crashes. If it skips at the boot animation, have you tried pressing start to skip them? Probably won't help I know, but you never know. Nah, first thing I tried, they just black screen and do nothing if I hit start.

How about holding the left and right shoulder buttons after turning the Saturn on?

Nope, again one of the first few things I tried, just makes it black screen.

So where ever the boot protocall is on the main board is whare the problem lies... what are the solder points on the CPU and main graphics chips etc like?
Strange that all 4 systems should have the same problem

Solder points are all fine, also the power board and laser assembleys from the dead systems work fine on my A7 motherboard, so must be some sort of motherboard problem

Wonder if overheating could cause this problem, i have a sega saturn that crashes sometimes it works for 30 mins an hour then sometimes it will crash, i wonder if overheating is anything to do with crashing saturns? Would be interesting to see if someone added heatsinks to some chips see if that helps.

My Saturn freezes on startup with the disc in, but it works fine without a disc in.
