Sorry if this is a old thread…
I've just purchased a action replay cart to play imports, I don't know much about it and I've heard certain games don't play.
Can anyone recommend good import games that will play using the cart and ones that you know wont. I've tried to google it and I've got mixed info; some say it wont play games post 98, some say it has problems with Marvel Vs SF, some say it works with all games, some say it gives games boarders etc.

Well there are 2 versions of that cart. The older model needed to be modded to run a few games (like Vampire Savior) correctly. The new model works with almost everything except, KoF '95, Ultraman, and sometimes In The Hunt. Note I only have ever used NTSC consoles and TVs. The Borders occur when using the cart to run PAL games on an NTSC console and possibly vice versa (I can't confirm this myself) If your new to imports, then I'd recommend fighters and shooters. I personally like X-Men VS Street Fighter the best for Capcom fighters. SF Zero 3 is also fantastic. The SNK ports aren't as good as they should have been, but most are playable. As for shooters, there are tons and it comes down to personal taste really. So a listing of stuff you really like would be useful. Theres also a ton of great RPGs, but it depends on your Japanese ability of course

Guardian Heroes, Nights and Panzer Dragoon are among my favourite games. There's loads of Japanese RPGs I'd like to play, but I speak very little. Does Marvel VS SF work well on a pal system using the cart? I love the game, it's top of my list of wanted imports.

Thats the new version cart. Most JP games should work with it. I have used mine to run Keio Flying Squadron 2 PAL on my NTSC NA Saturn, it had a border but ran fine. As for NTSC games on PAL systems, I have no idea, but I'm sure someone else on this board can answer that. ;D

Marvel Vs. SF does sadly not work well with the Action Replay cart, backgrounds appear glitched up. Same deal with X-Men Vs. SF. As for NTSC games on PAL systems, you will still have the problem of slower games with borders.
I don't know if anyone else has ever had this but several games that reportedly run fine with the Action Replay cart don't for me, 100% at least. Like for KoF '96 and Real Bout Fatal Fury, sprites would often appear as black squares! I'll have to try and get a screenshot sometime if no-one else has seen it.

I've played Marvel Vs SF and X-Men Vs SF on my old US Saturn with that cart for years and they played perfectly. No glitches at all.
It must either be an NTSC on PAL issue, or possible a faulty cart.

Ok, I got some pictures: Marvel Super Heroes Vs. SF is still playable, but the backgrounds do not work properly at all and the sound effects and music are broken. This is what I was talking about with certain games, sprites appear as square blocks! Some 1-Meg games work fine on my PAL Saturn, like Metal Slug, but then stuff like KoF '96 has this problem as you can see. When I tried X-Men Vs. SF it did work on my PAL Saturn, although the character speech didn't work 100%.

This is the traditional pb with some AR. Newly made AR are not always the good one as manufacturers take a previous model which does not work correctly with some games that required 4M RAM cart (Vampire Savior and game released after). So if your MvsSF doesn't work correctly, you probably have an old version of the AR (you can mod it btw). For KOF'96, this game has corrupt graphics with a 4M RAM cart, so probably the AR switch automatically to the 4M cart mode instead of 1M mode thus you have pbs with it. To a list of games that requires cartirdges, go here: www.satakore.com/cartridge.phpGames that are corrupt graphics with 4M cart but that need a 1M cart: Samurai Spirits Amakusa Kourin The King of Fighters '96

Yeah my cart ran MvsSF just fine, you must have the older version cart. And as madroms said most SNK games have problems with anything but the real 1mb cart, a real 4mb cart gives the same results.

It's weird, my action replay cart will play games like Metal Slug, KoF 97 and Samurai Shodown IV fine, and they all need a 1meg ram cart. But kof 96 and Real Bout 1 have problems. But I think it's a PAL issue rather then a busted cart.

Haven't had chance to play import games yet, but I'm bidding on some on ebay.
ALTHOUGH...it doesn't seem to save anything properly, the battery for my internal memory has died and I need a new one, could this be the problem? Or should it save anyway? I'm a little worried, if it should be saving without the internal memory, maybe it wont play imports either.

The Saturn's internal SRAM memory requires the battery. If its dead, your saves will disappear when you turn the system off. Just get a new battery, they cost about $2.

Yes, I understand that. What I mean is; does the action replay cart need the battery to function as a back up memory?
I know I need a new battery for my internal memory haha, but the carts not saving anything either. Does it work as a single memory unit (like the PSX cards), or does it need the internal mem to function properly? Why would I be worried about the cart not playing imports if I was talking about the internal memory?
