It's not the walking controls. It's the jumps. I'm sure I'll go back to it soon enough but right now they're irritating me. Here's a trick for nailing jumps on Tomb Raider. Hold down the walk button and walk right to the very edge of the platform you want to jump off of (you won't fall off if you're holding the walk button, so don't worry about overshooting). After that, tap down on the D-pad once so Lara does that little backwards hop. Once you've done that, start running and hold down the jump button. Lara's backwards hop covers the exact amount of distance you need to build up enough momentum for a running jump, so it's incredibly useful to use when trying to nail precise jumps. Myself, I can manage the walking and jumping in early Tomb Raider games just fine, but I'm always a complete mess when it's time to actually fight enemies. Jumping left and right to dodge attacks while firing in mid-air seems to be the best strategy I could find, but sometimes that's not practical when you're in a closed-in area.

I actually had the controls down, then I made the mistake of stepping away for a couple months.

After some playtime with Star Wars Arcade, I flipped the input over to the Saturn (my Genesis/Saturn are hooked to my CRT) and popped in Daytona, then Sega Rally.
Daytona is always fun, but...I just love Sega Rally so much. I like racing games in general, and it seems odd that one so sparsely featured could be my favorite, but...it is. Virtua Racing/Daytona USA/ Sega Rally Championship are my favorite car racing games these days(Hydro Thunder is obviously the best boat racer) but SR is the clear leader of the three.

Been quite busy and awfully inactive lately. But yeah, a lot of (Saturn) stuff has happened since I last time posted here. Maybe I'll make some post about what I have got in the software hauls thread if I'm up to it... But yeah, the games that I've played most are Athlete Kings and Winter Heat. Damn those are brilliant. Athlete Kings is more to my liking, but there is the minus that it doesn't support multitap. It's pretty annoying since the game could work as well with 3 or 4 players, just like Winter Heat does. Last night, I also played through Gale Racer again (with good ending, even though the opponent technically went over the finishing line first), took a few matches in Fighters Megamix and one co-op try in Layer Section. Fighters Megamix is really great. The sidestep is a nice feature that makes it a lot more modern, so to say. Though, I just wish it would also have the Last Bronx fighters in it, since they are rather cool. Daytona is always fun, but...I just love Sega Rally so much. I have sort of a problem with Sega Rally: I tend to oversteer a lot in it. Is it fixable with some options or is it just a matter of getting used to it?

I'd say it's just a matter of getting used to it.

I think the Last Bronx characters are a bit too hardcore for Megamix. I prefer them seperate imo. I also wish Athlete Kings was 4 player. That's the only downside as the AI isn't much of a challenge, it would have been nice to play it with 3 human players. Be sure to add to the Athlete Kings High scores thread should you happen to beat anyones score. Linkt101 is currently the champ on this. segasaturngroup.proboards.com/thread/153/athlete-kings?page=19&scrollTo=144232I also had a nice weekend of Saturn gaming. Elan Doree, Resident Evil and Quake along with some shooter fun with Night Striker S, Battle Garegga and Batsugun. Night Striker S, I actually completed for the first time, taking the left route. The bad english grammer in this game is really quite adorable. But it was the platformers that really shone this weekend. I got the furthest I'd ever gotten on Ninpen Manmaru and after weeks of frustration I finally completed Super Tempo. I really wish it had a save function as I could have completed sooner. But nonetheless a fantastic, varied and georgous looking 2D platformer and a massive Saturn gem. I might have to write a review on it now I've completed it.

Playing through Mega Man 8 for Saturn now before my Halloween games. Great looking 2D game as always from Capcom on the Saturn. Its different but they did some cool things with it. Not everyone's favorite Mega Man but a solid one. Mega Man 4 is the more interesting MM on the Saturn surely.

I love the music, the power-ups are cool, and the difficulty is pretty fair (outside of a couple of tricky spots). I played through this a couple months ago. Have fun!

Yeah after MM 1-6 and the return to old school in MM 9, MM8 is a nice change of pace that they only really did once (maybe MM7 a bit too) The colors in the game are very vibrant. The cheesy voice acting IMO is actually enjoyable when you are expecting it. Music is solid. I agree that the power ups are cool. The difficulty I also agree is fair. As with all MM games there are going to be frustrating areas. The snowboard level is taking me some time but its certainly unique and doable. And again its a great release in general because the Saturn version got by far the cooler extras vs. the ps1 version (two old school bosses definitely being worth it alone for nostalgia)

Been playing all the Saturn Racers with my new Arcade Racing Steering Wheel. So far it's had a huge difference on F1 Challenge, it's good for Dayton USA: Circuit Edition too although I'm yet to smash my lap record with it. I tried it on Sega Rally and it actually made my driving worse. Practice makes perfect I guess. Also tried it on Manx TT, it was okay but I found the Analogue controller best. I'll be giving Wipeout 2097 and High Velocity Mountain Race Challenge a go with it in the next few days. I doubt it is compatiable with Sonic R or Power Drift but I might just try and see.

I wonder if it'd be better with Sega Rally Plus, which has 3D Controller/analog support?
A wheel is one thing I'd like to get, but the eBay prices have been insane and they're not common locally.

Got Fighters Megamix again. Remember this being one of my favourites back when I first owned a Saturn. Surprised by how quickly I was able to pick it up again since I'm usually garbage at fighting games, but I guess the Virtua Fighter style just feels really natural to me after having played it for so long. Will have to unlock Janet and see if I still remember the broken gun combo! Got a few other games too, the most noteworthy ones being Darius Gaiden and Soukyuugurentai, both of which look amazing, especially Soukyuugurentai. Haven't really played much of them yet though (just tested them to make sure they work). Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the game supports the 3D controller? On SEGA Retro it's listed under the compatibility list for 3D controller games (link below) but it doesn't seem to be compatible at all when I tried it. I've got the NTSC-J version by the way. Has anyone else gotten it to work, or did SEGA Retro just mess up? I doubt the game would play that well with an analogue stick anyway, but I was wanting to try it out regardless. segaretro.org/3D_Control_Pad#List_of_supported_games

Non stop Arcade Wheel Racing action again this weekend with Grandia breaks inbetween. And after long dedicated hours I have finally completed DISC 1 of Grandia. This game is epically long and epically brilliant. Some of the 3D graphics I've seen already are mind blowing. Great story so far. Now on to Disc 2.

Spent some time with Alien Trilogy today. It plays pretty well, though I'd have appreciated the ability to aim on the y axis as well. Definitely a good game to have in the library.

Playing Panzer Dragoon Saga in 60hz through the OSSC lately. Drop dead gorgeous. Embarrassingly ive never completed it as I twice lost my save files. Will get there this time, now well into disc 3.
