I found Duke Nukem 3D didn't quite live up to its own hype, Exhumed too hard, Doom too rubbish and Quake very good. But Alien Trilogy was always my favourite Saturn FPS. I started it again from scratch tonight and I think it still holds good to this day as an atmospheric, tense blastathon.
Did you have a fave shooter on the Saturn?

Alien trilogy FTW, always found the atmosphere and graphics better than the 3D0 and Jaguar versions.

In order of preference: Quake, Duke 3D, Exhumed, Doom, Alien Trilogy, Hexen. I know Doom had a horrid frame rate, but I still managed to enjoy it. Alien Trilogy is a solid game, just never enjoyed it as much as the Lobotomy games. And as for Hexen, it was a fair port but the game itself is a bit complex - though I always wanted to try out the dodgy link up mode.

I thought Exhumed was too complicated, but looked stunning at the time. Hexxen was right up my street with the medieval theme, but the save points, IIRC, were way too far apart and it became a chore to re-start each level after getting killed.

Not the biggest fan of FPS. Got Duke, but found it too hard. So ended up putting it in God mode from level 2 onwards, It was a good game though and took me ages to complete. Used the guide from SSM, I was rubbish at video games when I was younger, still am pretty rubbish

Doom was near-unplayable in its PAL form, although I've heard the later Japanese edition boasted some minor improvements. Hexen and Exhumed were decent enough, though I do prefer Robotica/Deadalus and particularly Alien Trilogy (which still manages to run better than most other first person shooters on the Saturn despite its port only using one of the system's two main processors, fact fans!) for its atmosphere. Quake is technically the best there is, but stripped of its famed multiplayer side not even fancy new lighting effects can save this one from being slightly disappointing. As for Duke Nukem 3D, there's no denying how much I got out of this game, even if these days I only ever stick the disc in my Saturn for a quick blast at Death Tank Zwei... which is another title with issues, having the opposite problem to Quake by desperately lacking a single player feature!

Roughly in order of preference, although the top three are interchangeable depending on what I'm more in the mood for.
Quake A good port of a classic game. Sure, it's missing the multiplayer mayhem that made it into a smash-hit PC title, but the single player experience is all there, and it's damn great too! Atmospheric and challenging, all set in a cool medi-evil type setting.
Duke Nukem 3D A good port of a fantastic, and at the time, revolutionary game. The real-world settings and humour really add to the game, and make for a really enjoyable gaming experience.
Exhumed A great, more brain-intensive FPS that I enjoyed. Backtracking to find items or hidden areas made the game much more interesting and a lot more challenging. A great game, that didn't get the praise it deserved (except from SSM!)
Alien Trilogy A very atmospheric game. Sure, it looks pretty ugly these days, particularly the alien sprites, but it had a shit-scary atmosphere to it that I still love. The music is awesome too.
Doom Sure it runs pretty crap, but it was one of my first Saturn games, and I really enjoyed it at the time. It still has all the atmosphere of the PC original, which made it good enough in my book (at the time).
Hexen I thought the port of Hexen was abysmal, and don't understand why SSM gave it such a high rating. I thought the PC version was MUCH better.

Exhumed may not have received much in the way of praise from consumers or other publications apart from SSM, but somebody was definitely paying attention since Lobotomy ended up being given the unenviable task of converting Duke Nukem 3D and Quake near-simultaneously when other developers had tried and failed! The fact they pulled off both games with improvements over the original source material on a system most (wrongly) thought to be underpowered only serves to further prove that Lobotomy was a first-class team. Sadly, they later closed up shop and the gaming world lost a real talent. At least they didn't go without leaving we Saturn owners a few memorable examples of their short-lived collective programming genius...
P.S. Tempest, I'm totally with you on the subject of Hexen and why SSM rated it so highly. Also, have you all forgotten the Saturn's other first person shooters? Of course, I am referring to Robotica and Gebockers, the latter being a fantastic (and criminally unreleased outside of its native Japan) multiplayer title and one of the few games to support the link cable, which also never saw the light of day here in Europe!

I won Exhumed for £2 on Ebay, so it'll hopefully be here tomorrow. I'm going to give it another more serious shot this time.

I was really Disappointed with how Doom turned out, It plays like Junk and The Control doesn't really go well with the game in my opinion, Would have liked it if it was compatible with the 3D Controller

I've never really liked FPS's on consoles. I prefer them on PC. Doom, Heretic, Descent, Duke Nukem 3D, and Dark Forces were so awesome on the old 486DX2. Then I upgraded to the Pentium 90 for Quake and especially Descent ]['s multiplayer mode. Get 8 skilled Descent ][ players togeather, and damn is it crazy! Too bad Descent ]I[ was a let down, as I miss that series so much.
I always did want Powerslave (Exhumed) on Saturn, but never had a chance to play it I'm afraid.

Yeah PC's are King for FPS games, DOOM, Quake, Half Life, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, Painkiller... the List goes on, the Mouse and Keyboard is the BEST was to play FPS games, FPS isn't really suited for Controllers in my opinion, they're not as Accurate compared to the Mouse and Keyboard, and you have alot more Room and You can use your Whole hands instead of Cramping up your hands to use your thumbs on a Controller.

Exhumed was underrated on PS1 as well. That's the console I completed it on.
Yes, it was tricky in parts, especially the bosses (I seem to remember one in an Arena being particularly awkward), but I loved the game and was sad when it was over.
No, I didn't unlock everything but I did find some hidden areas.
I now have it on Saturn, so I will revisit it at some point.
IMO it is way better than Doom.

I'm one of the few who enjoys playing Doom on the Saturn A good port of a fantastic, and at the time, revolutionary game. The real-world settings and humour really add to the game, and make for a really enjoyable gaming experience. This is exactly what I miss about these modern day first person shooters, they are so dull, bring back some hardcore Duke action, on the streets and in a space ship that actually has some charm. While on the subject, the N64 version of Duke 3D is pretty damn good, sure it's censored and features no strippers flashing their pixels, but still ace, multiplayer was good fun as well. "Wow Mama"
