I decided to play this first of my recent acquisitions from Xander. I've probably mentioned this here earlier, but I was blown away by Alone in the Dark for the 3DO, so I've been eager to check out the successor survival horror franchise on my favorite console.
Seems okay so far, though I find it curiously like a downgrade from Alone in the Dark in many ways. The combat is clunkier, the style is more b-movie, the health indicator is less helpful, the voice acting is more laughable, the camera angles are too many, and the inventory is limited to irritating levels. Most importantly, the placement of enemies seems far more haphazard; I have yet to experience any of the artfully designed scares that won me over in Alone in the Dark.
On the plus side, I like the load screens, especially the way the next room's audio comes on at the precise moment that the door opens. It's a creepy bit of realism. Also, I don't know whether this pleases or displeases me, but I'm surprised at how much of an Alone in the Dark clone Resident Evil is. Some of the mechanics are tweaked, but there are no innovations over the earlier game.

When it comes to Resident Evil the original debut game itself has not aged very well and is probably not the best indication of what makes the classic (pre-RE4) series special.
Play Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, now that game was fine! You could also play ports of RE 2 (my personal fav) and RE 3 on the DC.

RE2 is my favourite RE as well. I never played RE1 when it first came out but i did get it for the Saturn a couple of years ago. I was severely underwhelmed. Even taking into account its age, its incredibly ugly (and not in a 'we havent really tried' way like Die Hard Trilogy, you could tell theyd tried hard but maybe tried to do too much), the controls feel like theyre working against you (RE2 is the only D Pad RE where the controls felt right imo), its slow and repetitive.
Since playing ive decided RE1 was to test the water and RE2 was the game they wanted to start the series with.

I still love and play Resident Evil to this day, but I can see that playing it now if you're not familiar with it would be very frustrating. I've played through the first two games so many times now that I don't really notice it at all.

You NEED the Resident Evil remake on the Gamecube, it's a real breath of fresh air and by far the best way to enjoy the original game IMHO.
I also found Resident Evil Ø on the Gamecube very enjoyable.

Can anyone comment on the WII edition of the Gamecube game? (Resident Evil Archives). That seems to be my only option given the WiiU only plays Wii games.

It's exactly the same game with additional support of the Wiimote and Nunchuck, they didn't even make it widescreen, it's identical.
I highly recommend using the classic controller, I was never fond of the Wiimote and Nunchucks on it, but that's just personal preference.

The classic controller just feels weird.

Is the nunchuck/wiimote combo good enough to make me enjoy the game, or is it very uncomfortable?

He's using a WiiU so that's not really an easy option.
@virtuamuser it's personal preference really mate, it's a perfectly good control scheme, I just personally prefer using a pad for it.

No worries; I'm definitely playing Code: Veronica at some point, because I already have it! My brother bought it back when it was released. I never played it then because I avoided horror games (I was, and still am, very squeamish). I remember my brother thoroughly loving it, but either I misremembered or his attitude towards it has cooled over time, because when I talked to him about it a few months ago he seemed pretty ambivalent about it. He said I'd probably enjoy it, though. I'm actually enjoying Resident Evil, too. Objectively, the game's design is terrible. Enemies are unbeatable without a loaded weapon, and boringly easy with one, while the puzzles are just locked doors, so the gameplay boils almost purely down to inventory management. But for me, inventory management is inexplicably addictive, and mapping out dungeons is twice as addictive as that. This is a much lower level of enjoyment than I got from Alone in the Dark, and the load times combined with the need for constant backtracking is a nuisance, but fun is fun.
