Using the cart port is probably the worst route for doing such a thing...

Using the cart port is probably the worst route for doing such a thing... Present your alternative and the reasons for it.

I presume he means that the cartridge port is sh*tty, unreliable, and can - in some cases - actually damage/erase cart ROMs.

I don't know if he means that or if with Zyrobs extensive knowledge of the Saturn he maybe means that there's not enough bandwidth for nice fast ISO loading, for instance.
Um, a straight-up optical drive emulator?

Nice idea I hope it works out, BUT as already said the catridge slot is the weak point on all Saturns. I would be concerned about long term reliability, but its still a nice idea.

IF they included the additional memory, and save game storage as well, it would be the first and last cartridge you ever needed to use though.

I agree with this chappy from the link in the article from the OP
"Dr. friends are good high-end, master strikes! Everyone ready for the Saturn storm again now! True! Strongest gameplay!"
True that, my friend. True that.

One problem with using the cartridge slot is the inability to use the RAM carts and the memory cartridge. Maybe it is possible to combine those functions with the flashcart(if that even works) but I doubt it.
I definitely like the progress being made for playing disc images directly on disc-based systems, though.
