Both of my Saturns have defective cartridge slots. One of them will only work if I push and hold the cartridge forward and the other one will only work if I do the opposite. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to fix them?

Get some glass cleaning grease removing (cleans with vinegar) fluid such as windowlene spray and clean the gold contacts of the cartridge it's self. Use cotton buds to wipe over the gold contacts.
Cleaning the cartridges should always be done first on any machine before touching the cart port!
Failing that and I have only ever done this to an Amstrad GX 4000... Having a cart sat inside a machine can make the port looser over time as the memory of the metal bends outwards. Each of the contacts that hold the cartridge can be slightly bent forwards again to hold the cartridge better. You need something small to get behind each pin and bend them forwards again by just a couple of millimeters, no real force is to be put on the pins, just a gentle nudge. When you put a cart back in it will be good as new, fits nice and tight.
Clean the actual cartridge contacts first as the gold contacts attract dirt you can't see with you own eyes, over time this can build up stopping it from working properly even though it may look clean. More times than not this is normally the only thing that needs to be done.

Having the same issue - altbough only the 4MB RAM feature of my Action Replay isn't working. Let us know if the cleaning did anything for you, Martianman.
Difficult to bend the contacts, Mik, =/. They're just like small copper stitches - and can be pulled out a little, but in my case, don't stay out.

Clean the cart before you go blaming the cart slot.
