I already own Megaman x4 which I absolutely love now looking for another Megaman experience. So the question is how does Megaman 8 compare to X4? Has anyone played both? Which is the better game? Also which was released first? This is something I've never found an answer for as they both seemed to appear around about the same time. Thoughts and opinions much appreciated.

I've played both on the PS1. MM8 and MMX4 are from two different series with different feels. Personally, MM8 is my favorite game in the original series. It looks, sounds, and plays fantastic, and is much easier than pretty much any other entry in the series, which is great for newcomers. A lot of people hate the VA, but I think it gives all the characters personality in a way no other classic series game does.
X4 is my favorite of the X series. It was the first time playing as Zero was a significant feature and he offers a nice change of pace from the ranged attacking X. I think the game is better played as Zero.
I believe that MM8 came out first, at least in Japan. I know the PS1 version came out in 1996 there, idk about the Saturn. X4 didn't come out anywhere until 1997.
If you can find MM8 for less than $50, go for it. I wouldn't pay any more for it. The game went from reasonably priced to insane almost overnight. It does offer some additional content vs the PS1 version, but it ain't an extra $150 worth.

The only Megaman game I have ever played is Megaman 10 (Wiiware version). Splendid game but the difficulty is brutal - but that's the series trademark.

I've always been curious about Megaman 8, I think I'll have to add that to my collection based on your recommendation. That will be after I complete X4 which is insanely hard. Both games look amazing on the Saturn. I actually don't mind the VA and think it adds a certain humour to the game. You're right about the price though, it is ridiculous.

Mega Man 8 came out first by a long shot, in both North America and Japan.
Mega Man 8 is okay, definitely not as good as Mega Man X4. In particular, it seems a very half-hearted attempt to bring the original series into the next generation; you can see just how half-hearted by looking at Mega Man and Bass, a Super Famicom game with graphics which are pretty much identical to Mega Man 8's.
But as a Mega Man fanatic it still has a place in my heart, even if I don't go back to it nearly as often as most games in the series. The level design is plagued with insanely difficult sections (the jetboard sections alone are more than half the reason I haven't popped the game into my Saturn for years), but they have occasional moments of the ingenuity the series showed in the NES era. The bonus appearances of Cut Man and Wood Man are a nice treat for Mega Man fans. Plus I just like having a Mega Man game with FMV cutscenes. The plot and dialogue are as laughable as the acting, but a lot of the FMV animations are really gorgeous. And as usual for the series, some of the robot masters are pretty nifty; Astro Man, Search Man, and Clown Man are favorites of mine.
I can't stress the aforementioned difficult sections enough, though. If X4 really is "insanely hard" for you, you'll find Mega Man 8 flat-out unbeatable.

Then at least I'll be getting value for money. Love games that take awhile to complete far more justifiable when you're paying high prices. I just had a look at the SNES Bass version, you're right about the graphics not much difference.

I go back and forth on difficulty; sometimes I feel the need to sink my teeth into a real challenge, and other times I just want to lay back, turn the stress down, and whip through a game without breaking a sweat.

I don't know about the Saturn specifically but I thought it went X3 (1995) --> 8 (1996) --> X4 (1997). I own the JP versions of all (and get this...) for $30 each!! This was a few years ago but still feel like I lucked out there even though they're the JP versions.

I constantly see Rockman X 4 going for £15-£20 as well as Rockman x 3 JP. I thought that was normal.

Ah, I thought they went for more than that. If they're still cheap - that is amazing. Really goes to show you how far collectors would pay. I mean, I am keen for a US copy but the $$$ is just mental compared to a £20 JP version. I mean, it's always the way.

Since you're already on the topic of the JAP ones of Megaman, can I get the JAP versions without being annoyed by the language in the games? £15-£20 is a huge difference compared to £115 some sell it for here in Sweden...

I'm not sure, all depends on your tolerance levels. Speaking on Megaman x4 as that's the only one I own, still yet complete the game, I have noticed that text is quite frequent between levels as enemies like to stop by and have a chat. The story although nothing earth shattering is actually quite interesting and I probably wouldn't enjoy the game as much if I didn't know what was going on. But it all depends on you. There may be multiple choice options to make somewhere later in the game but so far I haven't encountered any. Oho is probably the best person to ask since he owns all 3 jap versions.

You get the general gist of the story but you never understand the intricacies. Since it's an action game, the gameplay is not hindered in anyway and is fully playable.

Heck, even £20 each is mental given how cheap you can get Mega Man X Collection, which has both X3 and X4 in English. I had a PAL copy of X3 but sold it on when I realized that (1)I already have a copy of MMX Collection, which has virtually the exact same version of the game, and (2)I could make some Saturn collector happy by selling my Saturn version for a reasonable price. I'm still hanging on to my NA copy of X4, though. I like the game too much to give up the experience of playing it with a Saturn pad. Maybe someday.
