Another Irish person who plays Saturn. I thought I was the only one. Yeah, I had a psx back in the day, Amiga's before that. I only got into Sega with the dreamcast, which I still have and collect games for. But I picked up a Saturn with two pads a few years back - now I'm thinking its a good accompaniment to my Dc. I enjoy shmups and arcade games a lot and its cheap to just play burned copies - I might be unemployed soon, but I'm hoping not. I have an old crt telly at my parents place too, so that can work. So, I might explore the Saturn library. Real hardware is more fun than emulation.

Keep that CRT - and if the TV supports it get an RGB SCART cable for the console. That will give the best picture. I still use a CRT with all my consoles pre Wii/360/PS3.
It might be a bit of a lottery whether the TV supports a 60Hz signal but it more likely than not will be fine.

If you live in central Europe, I could sell you a pre-modded machine. Hi. How much? I'm in Ireland. What mods are in the Saturn? If I buy one I suppose I could sell my current Saturn to offset costs a bit. I'm selling my Amiga 1200 atm too as it happens. The rhea or phoebe options are too expensive for me right now. I'd ask for around 130€ for the machine since Saturns are getting more and more expensive nowadays, I just can't put them together for any less. Problem is that shipping to Ireland is 50€. That's why I mentioned central Europe, since to that area I can ship much cheaper. It's a model 1 with region free bios, 50/60hz switch, and a modchip. The region free bios will allow all software to boot automatically, as long as they don't need extra hardware (VCD card or RAM expansion). The 50/60 switch is hidden next to the battery, so the case is not drilled anywhere. It's also soldered in, so it doesn't come loose - I finally found a switch that fits there properly (it doesn't get in the way of the VCD card either). And the modchip plays backups. So basically you can pop in any original or backup game and they'll play fine, you only need to fiddle around the back if you want to switch between 50/60hz. And you can still stick in a RAM cart if you want to, or use an Action Replay for cheats, or just a memory backup cart.

But maybe another time.

I got myself one of these cartridges!
I never really need to take it out, and I use it every time I run a game to backup saves.
Only downside is, if I do ever take it out, the cartridge requires cleaning with rubbing alcohol or it won't be detected. This could be a problem with my console's cart port though.

Yes unless your console is full of sawdust and treacle you shouldn't need to clean it every time

A guy on ebay can do a full mod for around 100 euros including postage from the u.k. I might opt for this in a few weeks

Hope you're happy with whatever decision you ended up making. I do like the cartridge a lot - really useful for backing up and the potential for features to be implemented, such as cheats (if you're into that), which is the most recent one, and eventually a Phoebe/Rhea mode that combines the cartridge with RMenu (which I'm greatly anticipating). At the moment, the mod is *almost* the same as getting the cartridge - but the cartridge has the potential for so much more. That said, having it built into your Saturn is pretty good too, so both are great options; in the end it comes down to personal preference.
