Probably against the rules of the forum to tell you Not all all, emulators are perfectly legal, and im sure you own legal copies of every game you have ROMs for And live in America. The UK does not currently have "Fair use" backup laws. Although there is one planned That said, not that anyone seemingly cares. When was the last time you heard of someone being arrested for playing Sonic on Gens?

It's not wrong, just sad, I posess one copied game " sapphire" and as soon as I get it I will bin the copy. Having lists of roms on your PC or whatever...... stinks out, as a collector/gamer I look down on it...my choice though, I really love OWNING my games, slowly ading to my collection and not being a stig. Rom lovers will balk at this........TOUGH! Completely agree, i love buying games. i love looking at a massive collection of real games. just looking at roms doesn't feel as good. i feel i have accomplished something looking at walls of games.

I'm a collector and a rom lover... I look at my wall of games... And feel that I have wasted a lot of money, mixed with a degree of pride, hunger and lust. What irritates me, is when some collectors try to infer that they are somehow superior to people who do not follow their collecting habits. An example of this is AES vs MVS collectors.... AES collectors think they are the shit, let's face it. Yet the MVS produces exactly the same results for a fraction of the price - so logically, based on this, there is absolutely no reason to buy AES games. I'll openly admit that I am not a big fan of the eilietist style of"completism" that seems to be a scourge to ebay. I myself used to be very completist, however in recent times I have come to view it as a form of insane greed. I saw people saying things to others like "Games that have scratches are worth nothing". No offence to completists of course you're entitled to your own opinions no matter how wrong they are

I don't honestly think i could ever bring myself to pay more then £40 for a game and even then it would have to be worth it. Personally i really dont like spending more then £5 on a retro game :/ but if you look hard enough you can find alot. But roms i don't know they just seem so false :/ haha the worse part is id rather have a fake game then a rom. XD

Companies themselves will use roms and emulation also. Megadrive Collection packs are always Emulated Because those lovely chaps at SEGA can't be arsed emulating the Arcade versions of Golden Axe and other games SEGA's most impressive emulated games pack was the Gunstar Heroes Treasure box for PS2, since it had options to switch between original, upscaled, progressive scan, english and japanese. Although I'd still like to see an official emulation of Turbo Outrun and OutRunners get released some day.

What do you make of authorized game download services such as the Virtual Console and Live Arcade, snowcat?

Personally i really don't like them, im annoyed at Nintendos new Wii ware thing too. I can see why people like them but to have to pay £15 to get around 3 games on a wii. (not sure about live arcade, never looked at it, my 360 not connected to net but bros is so ill take a look.) so instead of paying £15 to get 3 virtual games i can look around and find 3 real games, for the same price. haha, sorry guys I just like being able to hold the games (im annoyed at Wii ware, because im going to have to pay to get Pokemon ranch)

I agree... Nintendo's Virtual Console is a complete rip-off.
That said, buying King of Fighters 94 is still cheaper than the actual game, however Kof 94 isn't that good to begin with, so the attraction is kind of moot.
Although one thing that does please me about Virtual Console is that the developers are actually getting some money for the games, so by buying say; Phantasy Star II, from the VC, SEGA are actually getting some money for it, where as if I buy the cart, the only person that benefits is some eBay seller.
As for the Live Arcade, it's not that bad, as most of the games on it aren't actually physically available, or if they are, aren't the same.
Example is Puzzle Fighter II HD, the graphics and music in the Live Arcade version are new.

intresting, i remember my bro saying something about Golden Axe on the live arcade. I may have to take a look, just so i can say how bad it is but you are right the companies do benefit, but then with all the new games they produce do they really need to benefit from the retro business? i mean they all ready made money on that game once. also according to Edge magazine Sega is in for a really good year

I don't know about SEGA being in for a good year, Sammy are having a lot of trouble just now and it has a direct effect on SEGA. Recently, they've shut down SEGA's Korean office, Sammy's European office, and cancelled SEGA's plans to build a new arcade center in Japan I've not played the 360 version of Golden Axe, suffice to say, I don't think it could possibly be as bad as the PS2 remake

i remember my bro saying something about Golden Axe on the live arcade. I may have to take a look, just so i can say how bad it is Golden Axe on Live is a direct arcade port, right down to the Insert Coin bit of the arcade attract mode screen. Needless to say, I finished it with all acheivements ;D Take it from me, it absolutely rocks.

No offence to completists of course you're entitled to your own opinions no matter how wrong they are I feel sorry that you've wasted your money on collecting games chizzles. I am glad I don't feel the same. The reason AES is more expensive than MVS is because of the packaging and artwork and in some cases rarity. Thats just the way it is, thats collecting for ya. I personally like Jp artwork so I collect Jp titles including AES. People who think roms are better than real games either don't own them, will never own them or don't have a clue.......Every so often someone comes up with simillar daft comments about how roms are as good as the real thing. I couldn't care if people want a poor gaming experience but why would you think people who dont would be interested, cause honestly as a gamer and collector I'm bloody not........
