Problems after installing modchip

Hi guys, first post here, I've searched for this problem but couldn't find anything that related exactly to it, apologies if I've missed something.
I installed a Rob Webb Universal Modchip v3 in my 21 pin model 2 Saturn yesterday (following this guide www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBNDyihBD-w), and everything was working great at first. I burned 5 games to test out and play, 3 of them worked perfectly, one registered as an audio CD with too much data, but the 5th one looked good too. While playing the 5th game last night it froze mid level, so I reset the system, after which the disc stopped spinning in the drive and the system said "drive empty". The disc itself seemed thinner and flimsier than the rest of the discs I'd burned onto, so I burned another copy of it, which did the exact same thing - played fine briefly, then froze and wouldn't load again.
Since then I've burned another copy of the game that didn't work, and again tried all of the games that were working fine before, but now I'm getting nothing. Legit games still run fine, but any time I put a backup in the system doesn't even recognise there's a disc in the drive, and while the disc spins slowly for a short time when the system is first booting, it will stop before loading and says the drive is empty. None of the connections I soldered have come loose, and aside from connecting the ribbons to the chip I didn't touch anything to do with the disc drive. I'd assume it was some problem with the laser, but it's running legit games without a problem so I don't think it's that. The only other strange symptom is the system no longer retains its memory, this could be as simple as the lithium battery having died but it's probably not been in the system long enough for that to be the case.
I'm fairly new to all of this and don't even know what a potentiometer is never mind how to adjust it, in fact even installing the chip was something I wasn't overly confident I could pull off, but with it working fine for a few hours then crapping out this is a really strange problem to me. Any help would be appreciated because I'm lost.
tl,dr: System was working perfectly after mod, hours later a backup game froze in play, no backups work since.
