Man, I love this game! I'm not a big shmup fan, but the high quality hand drawn graphics along with the fantasy setting sold me. I also really like the core mechanics of the game. Grabbing the elemental sphere in order to do combos is a cool mechanic for the genre. So I'm kinda perplexed by some of it and I have some questions.
First off, sometimes when you first fire your basic attack it'll do some sort of special attack where the projectiles change in direction or get bigger. Is that just RNG or can I control that?
In order to get an elemental sphere you have to throw a crystal at an enemy, but sometimes you'll shoot and an elemental ball will fall and hit an enemy creating an elemental sphere. Is that just RNG can I control that somehow?
When you don't have any elemental crystals equipped your special attack throws a yellow ball. If the ball doesn't hit anything it hits the ground and stays there. If you keep using your special attack the ball grows and grows. Is there any stategic reason I might want to use that for something?

Your comments have made me more excited I second the recommendation of Cotton 2 Derek, it's absolutely brilliant. Everything Sonnington has said about it is true. It was actually Superdeadite that put me onto Cotton 2 many, many years ago and 3 + years gone, I'm still only average at this game. There's so much depth to it. Of course its still fun if you just want to blast things and not neccessarily worry about the shooting mechanics, coloured crystal and points system e.t.c so it's a win, win all round. Two thumbs up.

The game reminds me of Magical Chase (an ultra rare game on the Turbo-Gfx). The thing I remember most about the game is having to tap buttons to shoot. Rather than simply holding down like most shumps.

Magical Chase and Keio Flying Squadron have alot of the same feel. Maybe that was a theme in Japan? Both of those former games are insanely expensive but I get the feel Cotton 2 is far and away a better game.

The game has a system whereby if you do street-fighter style special moves it will fire off a special burst of shot, but you don't need this and you can essentially ignore it I believe (I'm no expert at this game! ) I think that's what you're triggering as you move around.

I've just gotten back into Cotton 2 after years of absence and I really love it. I really wish it had gotten a PAL translation.

Oh, very good. I found this thread that gives some combo tips segasaturngroup.proboards.com/thread/4821/cotton-2-controlsI suppose I'll have to search for the manual sometime when I'm not so tired. It's true, you can complete the game without the combos, but I'm trying to beat it on hard and very hard which makes it more of a necessity.

I don't think you need it there judging by the playthroughs I watched, but again, I'm no expert.

Pretty sure the QC moves and HC moves are required to encapsulate your enemies in bubbles more effectively?
Also, Cotton Boomerang allows you to save Special Move presets to the shoulder buttons on your controller, from memory.
Surprise surprise, my master Saturn is on the blink again, so can't confirm this for myself right now (as I own C2 & CB).
I'm really NOT into Cute'em ups, however, Cotton has enough charm about it that it just straddles the line of cool and cute in a way that is comfortable for me.
I don't mind Parodius and Twin Bee series also...

I don't think you need it there judging by the playthroughs I watched, but again, I'm no expert. It would be wicked hard without the combos. There's a combo that allows you to turn enemies into an elemental sphere without having to throw a crystal at them. Which allows you to one hit kill any enemy. Otherwise you're sitting there shooting enemies up to 5-6 times a piece to kill them or shooting crystals and crossing your fingers they turn into the type you want. Trust, bruh, it's way easier with the combos. Anyway, I found the manual. segafans.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Magical-Night-Dreams-Cotton-2-JP.pdfB -F - Shoot turns the enemy hit into an elemental sphere. Makes the game sooo much easier and the points! Think of all the points!

I think it was Alamone I watched playing it, I didn't think he used the button combos much at all just basically kept the same capture going across the level. Could be remembering wrong though. I don't think you need the Hadouken type ones anyway.
