I heard rumours that someone was going to make an emulator that would allow you to play Saturn discs on your Dreamcast. Is this true? If so then why doesn't he make boot discs that would only allow you to play one specific Saturn game on the Dreamcast (like Bleemcast did for specific PlayStation games. That way the game could possibly run better (maybe?). Also the Dreamcast could improve the Saturn game's graphics and make the textures look smoother. Plus it would be a bit more convienient for me as my Saturn's currently pretty broken-ish and I would be happy to buy another Saturn but my shelves are completely stacked with consoles and I don't think I'm going to have anymore room for another console, and saving and loading games would be a lot easier too (earlier I made a thread about this). What does everybody else think? EDIT: Really sorry guys, I posted it in the wrong thread!!

I'm sure I read somewhere that this is not possible. Simply because the DC is way under powered for such a task.

There was something called "Satcast" but it was fake (I think it was an April fool a magazine like EGM started). I found this on a Dreamcast FAQ:
"Q: I heard that Sega was going to make a "Satcast" to allow Saturn games to be played on a Dreamcast. Is this true?
A: No. It's a lie/rumor started by some backwards compatibility advocate. All stories of backwards compatibility on the Dreamcast are false. There is no such thing as a Satcast, there will never be such a thing as a Satcast, and anyone who believes or hopes in such a program or hardware will only wait in vain."

The Dreamcast IS more powerful than the Saturn crazytaxi, however it would have to emulate three processors based on a different architecture than its own which it is not powerful enough to do.
If the dreamcast was based on similar technologies then this may have been possible, but it wasnt and its not.
Even next gen consoles will struggle to accurately emulate the saturn's hardware due to the Saturn's unconventional specification.

Reminds me of Sega's Anti "PlayThing" commercial. Oh well, at least we have Virtua Cop 2, and some other Saturn games ported to Dreamcast. Soooo, what about the Wii? Is there any chance that Sega could re-make some of their Saturn games for the Virtual Console, or is this also because the Wii doesn't have 3 processors?

Going by the Wii specs I cant see it being powerful enough for proper saturn emulation, the games would have to be proper Wii specific ports.

Sega actually tried to create its own Saturn emulator for the Dreamcast, which somebody unofficially dubbed "SatCast" once news of its existence finally leaked to the press. Of course, this didn't get anywhere because it soon became obvious that while both consoles do share a lot of the same architecture (the Saturn boasting two Hitachi SH2 chips and the Dreamcast one SH4 processor) they also used Little and Big Endian respectively, preventing true backwards compatibility. Besides, there's also the small point of the Dreamcast having to do the work of eight co-processors, though you can't fault Sega for at least giving it a shot. There is currently a similar homebrew project in the works, but I wouldn't hold your breath for anything remotely playable apart from the odd game that utilised just one chip (such as a few PlayStation-to-Saturn ports I could think of, such as Alien Trilogy for example). Very quickly, I should just point out as well that Sega later attempted to remake several key Saturn titles for the Dreamcast with as much of their original code as possible. This idea too was abandoned, since much of the source for Virtua Fighter 2 has somehow disappeared - for the PS2 remake as part of the AGES 2500 budget series, AM2 was forced to adopt some arcade code and fill in the blanks, explaining why the end product failed to perfectly recreate the coin-op.

It's the imperfection and mistakes that make the saturn king in my eyes.....It's unique! Genuinley the only console apart from PCE I have any real love for.

Funnily enough I read in an SSM letters page somebody asked if the 'cast would be backwardly compatible with the black beauty the response (from Gary Cutlack, I think) was that Sega would want to focus on modern technology and how upto date the new machine was. Fast forward six years and the launch of the '360 and people complain that the new machine didn't support 100% of the original Xbox's titles. Funny how things change, eh? I alot of this is down to Sony's decision to offer PS1 games on the PS2.
