I'll have to try a bit harder. As you may know, you can also view your scores when the game is in auto demo mode if you just leave the game at the Press Start screen, might be a long wait for your fav course to come by but it looks better as it shows the top 5 or so. Yeah the scoreboard options could of been better, ManxTT style showing your Rider would of been nice. As the options are it's very hip, bold and acid looking so very of the time in a UK type of way, what the late teens and early 20 year old's were into. The programmers way of trying to be cool if you get my meaning. But yeah would of been nice to see all times and scores instead of flicking through them 1 by 1. Nice to hear you too do the back/forth sweeping motion. That could well be the very thing some people might be missing. There might even be another thing we are missing, it could be faster to have your boarder facing into a corner rather than outward. Changing sides on the board could prove tricky at times but something to think about if there is ever a need to find more speed out of it.

Ive experimented with "carving" around turns and have had mixed results but it does work for the most part. It may actually have a deeper more authentic control feel than 1080 or CB3.

This is still Snow Board Park, but in demo mode and so we can see things better it comes up as New Zealand. If your wondering why I chose this course... It has loads of neat places to try different things, it's long, challenging and it's easy enough to get down it in one piece.

Ah yes that is much better. I will have to to let the demo run and it makes sense as its an arcade game to have that setup.
My goal tonight is to better your score mik!

Hoping you catch this before you start playing. I thought I'd try and squeeze a bit more out of it just in case a 16K score doesn't take you long. Have fun! PS. If demo mode from the PRESS START screen does not load your track then press C to skip the current one and repeat. It shows times first and then scores.

I played this last night after playing Winter Heat. I have to say that imo this game looks like ass after playing WH. It doesn't play bad though. I've said it before and I'll say it here, I wish they had made a dedicated skiing/snowboarding game from the respective events in WH.

Ill have to give Winter Heat a go. However, Brad, I love the way SSS looks. I agree Winter Heat has a more... hard to explain, clean feel like you get from Virtua Fighter 2, Die Hard Arcade etc? But SSS to me has this great earthy look that just goes with snowboarding for me. Less colorful which lends itself more to other titles. Everytime I play SSS I notice lots of little great graphical enhancements they pulled off for each course. Just my opinion though but the whole presentation and texture to the maps are very good.

I have to say today SSS finally clicked 100% for me. Before there were still some issues with the courses and handling but its absolutely amazing how realistic/deep the control system is in such an early snowboarding title. It takes a combo of the L and R trigglers and left/right on the Dpad to properly manage speed and turns. Ive almost mastered it to where I have total control of a run. So satisfying. Never thought this game would be this deep. And like Ive said before, being some who casually boards, it just feels right. The people who made this certainly took pride in making the sport feel right. I forget what poster said earlier on that he just couldnt get into this title, my only advice is master the controls and feel and it'll just click one day. MIK is certainly right, its a deeper snowboarder, not just your arcade pick up and play. One that takes a little more time.

It's a Japanese game which also says a lot. Some Japanese dev's excel in the maths department and why some games can offer so much from so little, like Sega Rally with it's 4 stages and 3 cars. On the face of it though some players may think it doesn't offer much, not forgetting some people think a game or stage is completed when they reach the goal... That's partly why SSS goes for peanuts on ebay when in all fairness it's one of the later Saturn releases and was/is a gem that should be selling for a lot more! But yeah, if your the type of player who gets a sense of achievement & reward from bettering your self you know full well with some games, (more so from the land of the rising sun) that you have only just started playing it when you reach the goal. Steep Slope Sliders is right up there with the best of them! and on top of that you can save and edit replays of your best runs which was a rare feature to have in a game from that era. Even the Demo mode had some thought put into it. Some cool stuff can be seen, the likes you may not of even tried. Great game and why it's always been a keeper in my collection!

I've been playing a bit of this too due to this thread and agree that it is a nice game. My copy is disc only though. Any tips on pulling off tricks?

US Manual: segaretro.org/images/6/67/Steepslopesliders_sat_us_manual.pdfThe obvious as you would is to make sure the board is straight when you land, and it's all in the timing to set that up if your spinning around. You could try this... I actually play it like I do Virtua Fighter 2, my left hand holds the pad like normal but with my right hand I press the buttons like an arcade stick so my fingers press the buttons. Not easy I'm sure if you have never done this before but you can get used to it. It's easier to do it with a Mk1 PAL/US Saturn pad as they thicker, more meat to hold onto it with just your left hand and so your Thumb and Trigger finger can get to work. You can also rest the pad on your leg/knee to support the right side of it. Use the Half Pipe stage to practice doing tricks as you go up in the air spinning around and for landing. It's just one long stage of the same thing and great for just that. As you go off a jump try pressing A & C together and then hold Left or Right Bumper while pulling Left or Right on the D-pad, you should pull off a nice stunt and spin like a champ. It's just a case of letting go just as the board becomes straight and your about to land. If the jump is a big one then follow up the stunt with the B button so you grab the board as you spin for more score. With practice it's possible to do a 1440 degree Indy Grab trick on New Zealand's big jump that is half way down the course. You can score well over 650+++ and more from one of those. It's just a case that the more you play the better feel your get for the timing of your tricks and what can be done on different jumps. Once you've got the basic's then it's time to push for more. Trying out different places to score can also prove helpful. Just remember though you don't have to use every jump you come across, you just need 5 that reward big scores. It's always worth trying again on some similar jumps though just in case you can better your previous scores, wiping out the lesser points of your current best 5. BTW, not that I used her to get my scores... Sticking with the main 4 characters, the girl can score 1 or 2 points more doing the same sort of trick as the guys. My top score was done with the guy who wears a cap.

That's partly why SSS goes for peanuts on ebay when in all fairness it's one of the later Saturn releases and was/is a gem that should be selling for a lot more! I agree with this. Most of the late titles have at least risen to closer to old retail prices while SSS has stayed very inexpensive. I imagine it had a larger print run than most being a popular type sports title. I actually had a brief thought about its value last night when I unlocked Steep Slope Shooters. It basically turns into a mini old school shmup. If people knew that was on there, price goes up 10-15 But yeah definitely shocked how deep this title is. All I ever had were handfuls of screenshots and a good review in Gamepro all these years to go by. And sometimes titles like this dont age well when playing them for the first time in 2016. But at this point its found a groove nicely when I do my old school sb game days along side 1080 and cool boarders 3.

I never saw the arcade machine my self either but it got me thinking... I wanted to see a picture of the machine so I could see how the button config was set up, I didn't find one but this video showing the arcade machines attract mode is interesting. The arcade looks a lot faster, more than likely was 60fps. It has only TWO buttons, and it looks as if jump was done by directing the stick. One button is Grab and the other Flip/Trick. I guess spin was implemented from the stick after jumping. It's all there like the Saturn version for controls by the looks of it, it's just simplified a bit more. Interesting as well is that the score board also shows a Total Best PTS, as if you get to run multiple courses and they all get added up? It has different music as well on a couple of stages in the demo's, same sort of sound and style though. As Derek has said before and I'm rewording it here, knowing it's linked to an arcade machine as well just adds the icing to an already great cake. Would be funny if the price increases over time and getting hold of it becomes harder because of this topic. One last thought... The reason the arcade machine may of came about might of been because of Namco, they released some big Ski arcade machine which you could stand on that was doing the rounds about the same time. If I remember correct Snow had not really been used in a 3D texture map arcade machine before so it may of been the new "in" thing. Maybe why the interest to turn a humble Saturn game into an arcade machine?
