Hi y'all, I am experiencing a strange problem with Metal Slug's "attract mode" (demo mode when waiting at the title screen and doing nothing) and my newly acquired Action Replay Plus 4M cartridge. See this video: youtu.be/9wfnJ9n6_GoI tried the Saturn Kamasutra - meaning, I tried every possible (well, at least a dozen) angles of how I can insert the Action Replay in the Saturn cart slot. Nothing helps. Do I have a faulty Action Replay? Do I have a faulty Metal Slug CD? Is this is known problem of Metal Slug's attract mode?

Oh hey, Eidolon. Do you have a backup of the Inn somewhere that can be downloaded?
I've tested my copy of Metal Slug with an action replay, and it doesn't glitch up (tested Rev A of the game). It's not impossible that the cart is bad, but I'd try more games using the RAM expansion before coming to that conclusion.

Most are brawlers/beat'em ups, I don't like that genre. Are there any worthwhile collectibles in the area of shooters, action, RPGs which need the cart and may help in debugging? Yes I have a full backup of the Inn, but not readily available. Archive.org is better. If you are looking for something particular, let me know... My plan still is to migrate the old content to the new website...

Cotton 2 was the only non-fighting game which used it for some extra animation. And some 3 or 4 dating sims changed the title screen if they saw the cart. The rest are indeed fighting games...

I actually had a problem like this with my AR briefly, but as I recall, re-seating it fixed everything (this hasn't been an ongoing issue).
That's also pretty much what it looks like when I use my AR with the few SNK games that have graphical glitching on the AR/4MB RAM carts. Assuming your cart is making proper contact, maybe the revision you have just doesn't play nice with Metal Slug.
Wait... are you saying this only happens in attract mode? That's definitely not an experience I've had.

Yep, ONLY in attract mode. When I start playing the game everything's fine. Weird indeed. The ARP4M version I have is 2.02 according to the title screen. Too old?

No, the 2.02 there is just the firmware version, and sometimes they don't even bother changing it for an even newer firmware.
I checked my rev 0 copy of Metal Slug and it didn't glitch up on the attract screen, but it DID glitch up on the last level of a playthrough. Upon resetting the machine, the game even refused to boot, saying that it needs the RAM cart to run, so obviously one of the pins on the cartridge did not make contact anymore.
So it's just the cartridge slots fault. I'd recommend taking your cart apart and thoroughly cleaning the contacts (I use a pencil eraser to scrape off the dirt, then isopropyl alcohol to get rid of the eraser marks), it can make just enough difference.
